Sea of Star Relics: Do They Disable Achievements or Trophies?

The Sea of Stars relics are extremely powerful. Some can completely turn the tide of battle, while others make the game much more difficult. Given that power imbalance, it’s easy to wonder if relics disable achievements or trophies in Sea of Stars.

Do relics disable achievements or trophies in Sea of Stars?

Relics do not disable trophies or achievements in Sea of Stars. Players can equip or unequip them at their leisure in the menu without being shorted out of their Platinum trophy or 1,000 Gamerscore.

Many of these relics drastically change the game, so it’s understandable that some may think that trophies or achievements would get turned off after enabling them. Creative director Thierry Boulanger explained during a stream in February 2023 that he wanted these casual difficulty settings to be explained in the game’s world and that there would be “no cost to [them].”

There are multiple types of relics that make Sea of Stars harder or easier, with many falling in the latter camp. The Amulet of Storytelling, which players start with, is one such example of the relics designed to take the sting out of combat, as it yields 100% more health and auto-heals the team after each battle.

Some are also more neutral and just change parts of the game. The Sequent Flare makes the timing of the small mini-games easier to see. It doesn’t make the timing any longer, but it serves as a clearer confirmation that the player is properly timing their button presses during fights. The Falcon-eyed Parrot relic also takes the hassle out of finding Rainbow Conch shells.

The “What a technique!” achievement or trophy, however, does require that players use a relic and will likely be the last achievement or trophy players earn (and is geared toward those in New Game Plus). It unlocks after killing 10 bosses with the Artful Gambit relic equipped.

This relic makes the game much harder by depleting the player’s health by 95% but ensures they keep one hit point if they successfully time their blocks. Damage also doubles if players time their attacks correctly. Essentially, players have to almost perfectly time their blocks and kill 10 bosses with this handicap.

Sea of Stars Relics FAQ

Q: Do equipping relics in Sea of Stars prevent players from earning achievements or trophies?

A: No, relics in Sea of Stars don’t disable trophies or achievements. You can equip or unequip them as you wish without affecting your chance to earn the Platinum trophy or 1,000 Gamerscore.

Q: What are some examples of relics that impact the game’s difficulty or mechanics?

A: There are various relics in Sea of Stars that can make the game either easier or harder. For instance, the Amulet of Storytelling provides players with 100% more health and auto-heals the team after battles, making combat less challenging. On the other hand, some relics, like the Falcon-eyed Parrot, aid in finding Rainbow Conch shells, while the Sequent Flare makes the timing of mini-games clearer without extending the actual timing. These changes can enhance the gameplay experience without necessarily affecting difficulty.

Q: Is there a specific achievement or trophy that mandates the use of a relic?

A: Yes, the “What a technique!” achievement or trophy does require the use of a relic. Players need to equip the Artful Gambit relic, which challenges them by reducing their health by 95%. To unlock this achievement or trophy, players must time their blocks nearly perfectly and defeat 10 bosses while facing this challenge.
