Baldur’s Gate 3 is releasing across multiple consoles at multiple different times, something that was made even more complicated with its Early Access status. Given that process, it’s easy to wonder if there is also a Baldur’s Gate 3 Switch release date.
Is Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to the Switch?
Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently on PC, coming to PS5 in September, and making its way to the Xbox Series X|S sometime after that. However, a Baldur’s Gate 3 Switch release date isn’t currently scheduled.
However, that doesn’t mean the RPG isn’t ever coming to Nintendo’s platform. Senior producer David Walgrave told Polygon in an interview in February 2020 that it’s all about priorities. At the time, the studio was just focusing on the PC version, a version that wouldn’t be finished until three and a half years later.
“It’s more about memory,” said Walgrave. “It’s just about memory and processing power.”
This mantra explains why the game is currently seeing such a staggered release. The studio also reiterated that in an update that announced the delay of the PS5 version. It explained that it didn’t want to “make other compromises to hit an arbitrary date.”
Larian, while mainly a PC-focused team, also has familiarity with the Switch. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition came out on the Switch in 2019, two years after the PC original and another year after the PS4 and Xbox One ports. The Switch release was praised for complementing the PC version, as it supported cross-platform saves. Digital Foundry’s analysis also praised the game’s technical performance for smoothly making the transition to the platform, albeit with some cuts here and there.
All in all, it’s unconfirmed whether or not a Baldur’s Gate 3 Switch port is on the horizon. But with a staggered release schedule across platforms and Larian’s last game making the jump, it’s entirely possible that players will be able to slay imps on Nintendo’s handheld console hybrid (or possibly its successor) in the future.
