Remnant 2 PC Performance Issues: How to Increase FPS and Reduce Stuttering

Remnant 2 PC performance in general is giving players trouble at launch. Many users report performance issues, like low FPS and stuttering, despite them having high-end specs. A part of the problem stems from the game being designed around upscaling in mind, as admitted by the developer Gunfire Games. This means that most players won’t get a stable framerate unless they use DLSS, FSR, or XeSS. The patch hotfix on July 24 for PC hasn’t particularly addressed performance issues either. Here’s what you can do to improve the PC performance for Remnant 2 for smoother gameplay.

How to improve Remnant 2 PC performance

Here are some measure you can take to improve general PC performance for Remnant 2:

  • Make sure that the default upscaler is toggled on – The best option is to use “DLSS – Balanced” as they has the greatest improvement in FPS compared to the other optimized settings.
  • Set the Shadow Quality to Low – Gunfire Games says that for better performance, changing the Shadow Settings will make the largest difference after upscaling.

Otherwise, the other graphical settings don’t matter too much in terms of general performance. You can keep Effects Quality, Post Processing, View Distance, and Shadow Quality on Medium or High and it won’t make too much of a difference.

In a post on the Remnant 2 Steam discussion forums, the developer also reveals issues with VRAM for users using the GeForce RTX 4090 cards and Intel 13900k chips. Starting the game using Windows 8 Compatibility Mode is the best solution here. In addition, the developer has several workarounds for the “DirectX 12 is not supported” bug that may be a remnant of problems with Unreal Engine 5. They recommend that you create backup saves for Remnant 2 too, just in case they might get corrupted.

Gunfire Games promises that they are working on performance patches that will release after launch, not only for PC but also for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. With any luck, the game can be played at a solid framerate without an upscaler in the future.
