You can get the Blue Onion early in Pikmin 4, but you’ll need to dedicate yourself to the task. In the first level, Sun-Speckled Terrace, there’s a hidden Blue Onion, and nabbing it allows you early access to the swimming Blue Pikmin. At this point in the game, you don’t technically meet the requirements to obtain this onion, but there’s a way around that which we’ll describe below.
How to get the Blue Onion in Sun-Speckled Terrace in Pikmin 4
You can find the Blue Onion early in Pikmin 4. It’s hidden in the first level of the game, Sun-Speckled Terrace. However, it’s tough to reach and requires some prerequisites.
To get the Blue Onion in Sun-Speckled Terrace, you’ll need the following:
- You must have saved Russ and unlocked the ability to ride Oatchi.
- Oatchi needs to learn Buff Lv.3.
- You need to obtain the two Flarics from Sun-Speckled Terrace to unlock the ability to control 40 Pikmon.
- One is on the north edge of Sun-Speckled Terrace surface (requires Yellow Pikmin)
- The other is located in the Last-Frost Cavern.
- You need at least 30 Ice Pikmin.
To get the Blue Onion, head to the location marked on the above map. Then, move the base to 2. Rugged Scaffold to minimize the distance your Pikmin will have to travel. Then, grab 30 Ice Pikmin and 10 Red Pikmin. Now you’re ready to start the steps needed to obtain the onion:
- Freeze the nearby lake with 30 Ice Pikmin.
- Task the Red Pikmin with building the wall.
- Climb the wall and take down the Fiery Blowhog.
- Tell your Red Pikmin to start digging out the Blue Onion.
- Head back down and mount Oatchi.
- Recall the Ice Pikmin, wait until they climb onto Oatchi, then jump on the area with the air geyser.
- Now, throw all the Ice Pikmin back in the water as close to the wall as possible.
- When the water freezes, head over to the wall and recall the Ice Pikmin.
- Climb the wall and assign all Pikmin to carry the onion.
- The Pikmin will carry the onion to the ledge with the air geyser but can proceed no further.
- Recall all Pikmin and throw 30 Ice Pikmin back in the water.
- Assign the 10 Red Pikmin to carry the onion.
- Tell Oatchi to help.
The whole idea behind this plan is to get the onion to a position where Oatchi can use his Buff Lv. 3 to add an extra 10 Pikmin’s worth of effort. That’s the only way to get the onion to your ship without getting at least two more Flaric from another level.
