Diablo 4 Skills Not Working Bug Fix: Why Have Abilities Stop Working?

A strange Diablo 4 skills not working bug is popping up in the game. Almost randomly, players report that the skills and abilities that they have assigned on the hotkey bar don’t activate. It’s a weird glitch because players are still able to move, interact with NPCs, and open the map, so it doesn’t seem like it’s a performance issue. There doesn’t seem to be a particular cause for this error as it can happen at any time. Fortunately, there are some solutions that you can use to get your abilities to work again. If you find that skills stop working suddenly, here’s how to fix it.

How to fix Diablo 4 skills not working

The following solutions are some ways to fix the problem of skills not working in Diablo 4:

  • Leave the game, going back to the character select screen. Then rejoin and see if that resets the skills bar.
  • If you’re on PC, you can try pressing Alt + Tab to switch to the desktop or another program. Then Alt + Tab back into the game and see if that fixes the skills.
  • You can also try opening up the map and teleporting to a nearby waypoint. There’s a chance that this will work while saving some of your progress.

Either way, if you’re playing a character on hardcore mode, we suggest leaving the game immediately. We’ve searched around the official Diablo 4 forums on Blizzard and various threads on Reddit, and this bug has reportedly caused more than a few hardcore characters to perish permanently.

It looks like this particular bug occurs more frequently whenever players use a town portal or after a loading screen. Some players posit that for some reason the game thinks the characters is still in town, which locks their abilities and attacks.

Sadly, if this glitch happens when you’re in the middle of a dungeon or a lengthy story mission, you might be forced to start it over again. Hopefully, this bug is fixed before the beginning of Diablo 4 Season 1.
