Diablo 4 Performance Issues: How to Fix Stuttering and Lag

Diablo 4 has surprisingly low system requirements, but that doesn’t mean it’s without performance issues. Some users may find issues fixing stuttering and lag, especially on PC. While console users are stuck with picking between performance and quality settings, we’ve got some recommended Diablo 4 PC settings that can make a significant difference in your experience.

How to fix Diablo 4 stuttering and lag performance issues on PC

If you’re playing Diablo 4 on PC, there are a few universal fixes for stuttering and lag you can use for almost any game:

  • Turn on DLSS
  • Turn down shadows
  • Turn on Low FX setting
  • Lower resolution

Turn on DLSS

Nvidia’s DLSS technology can increase performance in Diablo 4 because it uses AI supersampling to essentially run the game in a lower resolution while keeping similar picture quality to the target resolution. The only requirement is that you have an Nvidia GeForce 2000 series or newer GPU. Unfortunately, that’ll leave out our friends using AMD or Intel graphics, but it’s like magic for those who have the option to use it.

Turn down shadows

Shadows eat up more processing power than pretty much any other setting in most PC games. So if you’re experiencing poor performance in Diablo 4, start by lowering the quality of the shadows. If that doesn’t work, start playing with the other settings until you find the right combination for you.

Turn on Low FX setting

Diablo 4 has a Low FX setting near the bottom of the graphics options menu that will tank the game visually in an effort to make it playable on low-power systems. For example, if you’re trying to run it on a 15-year-old laptop with Intel graphics, this would be the setting you want to activate.

Lower resolution

I know it’s anathema to PC gamers, but you might have to consider lowering your resolution. Unless you’re rocking an RTX 4080 or 4090, you’ll still have to compromise between framerate, resolution, and fidelity. Of those three, resolution is probably the easiest to sacrifice for this game. If 4K isn’t working for you, drop down to 1440p and turn the sharpness up a bit, and you’ll barely be able to tell the difference.

How to fix Diablo 4 stuttering and lag performance issues on PS4, PS5, and Xbox

If you’re playing Diablo 4 on PS4, PS5, or Xbox, you have significantly fewer options when it comes to fixing performance issues. You can typically choose from performance or quality on console, and that’s it. However, you can also drop to a lower resolution through your system settings, which can help fix stuttering and lag quite a bit. Unfortunately, other than that, you’re likely stuck waiting for a patch to get any performance improvements.
