What Is Elden Ring DLC Expansion Shadow of the Erdtree About? Miquella and Torrent Explained

Revealed in what fans would deem ‘classic’ FromSoftware fashion at both a seemingly random time and in a surprising yet simple tweet, Elden Ring‘s upcoming DLC Shadow of the Erdtree has finally been announced. Accompanying the news was some gorgeous artwork featuring what is believed to be Miquella riding our very own Torrent, and looking towards what looks to be either a corrupted Erdtree, the Haligtree, or something else entirely.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree theories discuss Miquella and Torrent

Fans are already hot on the heels theorizing the most probable setting for the upcoming expansion, which was confirmed to be still in development. Given Miquella’s prominent position in the artwork, there are plenty of story implications and room for expansion surrounding his impact upon The Lands Between to work with and figure out where Miyazaki could be taking us next in what we deemed a 10/10 M-rated Breath of the Wild.

While it seems obvious from the art that we’ll be getting some clarity surrounding Torrent’s connection to what is already widely believed to be the youth-bound Demi-god Miquella, a big question remains: how will we get access to the DLC? Will we be traveling back to Miquella’s past or perhaps entering a Bloodborne-like dream state or instance?

FromSoftware often likes to revisit themes where some time-based or interdimensional shenanigans take place, so the ball really is in their court, but the method of how we get there could clear up what our goal in the expansion’s story may be.

Fans have already made great and believable guesses in possibly touching Miquella’s cocooned hand — after defeating the optional Lord of Blood who kidnapped him — which we believe to be the most likely route to accessing the expansion. An item or key of some kind will likely be added that allows us access to the additional content, expanding Elden Ring’s massive, truly open world even further.
