Elden Ring Atonement: How to Reset NPC Hostility and Calm Angry Merchants

Those who accidentally turned an NPC hostile or who killed a merchant in Elden Ring might feel stuck. Fortunately, although this game is punishing, there is a way for players to be absolved of their sins. Players can turn hostile NPCs back to their friendly old selves by seeking Atonement.

How to calm hostile NPCs and merchants in Elden Ring with Atonement

Elden Ring Church of Vows Map

Players can de-aggro hostile NPCs and merchants in Elden Ring through Atonement. This ability is unlocked by finding the Church of Vows. It’s located on a cliff above the eastern banks of Lake Liurnia. Players can either travel there physically overland or through a gateway in the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

At the Church of Vows, players will meet the turtle priest Miriel and describe the Atonement process. Players can interact with the statue in the small pond in the church and spend a vial of Celestial Dew to absolve themselves of any sins.

Atonement does two things:

  • Resets NPC hostility.
  • Resets all merchant hostility.

Resetting NPC hostility will also make NPCs that teleported away when they were attacked (like Sellen) return to their original locations. However, it won’t revive dead NPCs. Any characters that the player kills or that die from events in the story stay dead for the rest of the playthrough.

Players should also note that Celestial Dew is an exceedingly rare item in Elden Ring. There are a few in Ainsel and Siofra River Well, both in the beginning area and in Nokron and Nokstella. There’s also one that a Bloodhound Knight drops in the Academy of Raya Lucaria. However, don’t expect to run into them all the time. It doesn’t seem like a farmable item, and once the finite number in the game are gone, they’re gone for good. So, players who are wreckless and use Atonement as a crutch will be disappointed sooner or later.
