Zelda: Breath of the Wild Get A Horse And Make It Yours

There are a lot of things that are unexplained in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. Among these are how horses work. Given the amount of travel required to get around in the game, this is one of the most commonly questioned topics.

Unlike previous games, you will not be gifted a horse, or find yourself introduced to Epona. Instead, you need to head out into the wild and tame a horse for your own.

Where To Find Horses

Horses can be found in many areas of the map, most commonly near stables and villages. One of the first areas we ran into was the Dueling Peaks Stable near Kakariko Village.

The best place to look aren't open plains areas. The moment you scale a mountain or head into a dangerous area, it's unlikely you'll find any horses nearby.

Taming A Horse

No two horses are created equal, and you will find that some are harder to tame than others. This is expressed in their behavior when you're nearby, and not necessarily denoted by any physical attributes.

The first thing you want to do is sneak up to a horse. You want to do this by pressing down on the right analog stick to enter stealth, and angle yourself to approach the horse from behind. Once your next to it, simply press the button as prompted on the screen to hop on.

Horse Ownership

You can make a horse yours by visiting a stable and talking to the owner. For just 20 rupees you can name the horse, grab a saddle, and claim it.

At first your horse won't have a strong bond with you. However, over time it will learn to like you provided you care for it. One way to accomplish this is by pressing the L button when it loses its cool, calming it down and earning a stronger bond in the process.

One of the greatest benefits of owning a horse is you can whistle to have it appear near you. To do this simply press down on the directional pad when outside.
