There are five types of training manuals in The Last of Us Part 1 you can collect. Each one you find permanently improves an item. There are twelve of them total scattered throughout the game, and we’ve got the location for each of them below.

Here’s where you can find each Training Manual in The Last of Us Part 1 and what they upgrade:

Training Manual 1 – Shiv: Sharpening

Upgrade effect: Shivs last for one more hit

Location: Chapter 4 – Bill’s Town

Right after you meet Bill, look on the bar to find this manual.

Training Manual 2 – Health: Splinting

Upgrade effect: Health kits heal 33% more

Location: Chapter 5 – Pittsburgh

After the ambush at the beginning of the chapter, you’ll seek refuge in a garage. There, you’ll find this manual by some cots.

Training Manual 3 – Shiv: Reinforcement

Upgrade effect: Shivs last for an additional hit

Location: Chapter 5 – Pittsburgh

In the hotel lobby, you can find a safe behind the front desk. Inside is this manual.

Training Manual 4 – Melee: Knots

Upgrade effect: Melee weapon modifications last for two hits.

Location: Chapter 5 – Pittsburgh

After the scene where Ellie saves Joel from the hunter that’s trying to drown him, look in the next set of rooms for this manual sitting on a table.

Training Manual 5 – Molotov: Construction

Upgrade effect: Molotov explosion is 1.5x wider

Location: Chapter 5 – Pittsburgh

When you meet Henry and Sam, check the apartment before leaving to find this manual.

Training Manual 6 – Bomb: Containment

Upgrade effect: Bomb explosion is 1.5x wider.

Location: Chapter 6 – The Suburbs

You’ll find this manual in the sewers on a shelf near where you find the Shorty pistol.

Training Manual 7 – Melee: Techniques

Upgrade effect: Modified melee weapons last for one more hit.

Location: Chapter 6 – The Suburbs

When you exit the sewers, you’ll find a house that has an attic that Joel can boost Ellie into. She’ll find the manual and give it to you.

Training Manual 8 – Smoke: Chemistry

Upgrade effect: Smoke bombs last 10 more seconds

Location: Chapter 7 – Tommy’s Dam

Just before the large room with the turbines, there’s an area with a table in the middle of it with several NPCs surrounding it. On the table, you’ll find this manual.

Training Manual 9 – Health: Sterilization

Upgrade effect: Health kits heal 67% more

Location: Chapter 8 – The University

From where you see the monkeys, head to the building to the right. Afterward, go out the window on the second floor and shimmy down the awning to find another open window. Enter through here to find this manual on the right.

Training Manual 10 – Molotov: Deployment

Upgrade effect: Molotov explosion is now 2x wider

Location: Chapter 8 – The University

Once you enter the science building through the hold in the wall, head down the hall to find a shiv door. Inside is this manual.

Training Manual 11 – Smoke: Shaping

Upgrade effect: Smoke bombs last 20 seconds longer

Location: Chapter 9 – Lakeside Resort

Look for a shiv door behind the motel. Inside you’ll find this manual.

Training Manual 12 – Bomb: Shrapnel

Upgrade effect: The bomb’s explosion is 2x wider

Location: Chapter 10 – Bus Depot

In the underground tunnel area, you’ll find this manual on a white truck with a horse painted on it.
