F1 22 Cross-Gen Multiplayer

Does F1 22 Have Cross-Generation or Cross-Play Multiplayer?

The F1 22 FAQ on the official EA website has fans a bit perplexed. An unclear passage has led to some confusion on the whether F1 22 has cross-gen multiplayer and if it’s getting cross-play multiplayer this time around. Luckily, Codemasters has clarified the issue on its official forums.

Does F1 22 have cross-gen multiplayer?

Actually, yes! F1 22 will have cross-gen multiplayer, despite reports saying the contrary. That said, it is more than understandable that the situation was read the other way, as the original statement on the official F1 22 website concerning cross-gen multiplayer indicated the opposite:

“You will be able to match up with and against other players based on the version of F1® 22 that you are playing.

If you are playing the PlayStation 4 version of F1® 22 you will be able to match up and play with and against other players who are playing on the same version of F1® 22, regardless of whether they are playing on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. The same is true for the Xbox One version of F1® 22, where you will be able to match up and play with and against other players who are playing the same version on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

If you are playing the PlayStation 5 version of F1 22, you will only be able to match up with and play against other players who are playing the PlayStation 5 version. The same is true for the Xbox Series X|S version of F1® 22, where only players on Xbox Series X|S will be able to play with each other.”

This led many to believe that cross-gen multiplayer, a feature in F1 2021, had been removed in this year’s installment. But Codemasters staff members on its official forum have clarified in several posts that cross-gen multiplayer remains intact in F1 22 and that the statement on the official website will be changed:

“I can confirm that the cross-gen section [referenced on the website] is incorrect and is being amended. If you own the PS5 version of F1 22 then you will be able to play with players on both the PS4 and PS5 version of the game. You will not need to switch between versions.”

“Yes, the same is true for Xbox. If you own the Xbox Series version of F1 22 then you will be able to play with players on both the Xbox One and Xbox Series version of the game. You will not need to switch between versions.”

Since then, the entry on the official website has indeed been altered, with the third paragraph taken out in its entirety. However, the remaining response is still awkwardly phrased. Luckily, the official response from Codemasters is much clearer on F1 22 cross-gen multiplayer.

Does F1 22 have cross-play multiplayer?

F1 22 Cross-Gen Multiplayer

Unfortunately, F1 22 will not have cross-play multiplayer. This isn’t too much of a surprise given that F1 2021 doesn’t have cross-play either, as verified by Codemasters, but it is still a bit of a disappointment that Xbox, PlayStation, and PC owners of the game won’t be able to compete with one another. Cross-play is a popular feature for modern competitive games, so we can only hope that EA and Codemasters are able to incorporate it into future F1 games.
