Is Overwatch 2 Xbox exclusive now? After the incredible news that Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion USD shocked the gaming world, this leaves a big question mark regarding all of the publisher’s major upcoming games and whether or not they will come out on PlayStation platforms anymore. So, will Overwatch 2 come to PS4 and PS5 after all? Or, is Overwatch 2 an Xbox exclusive game now? Here’s what’s known so far.
Will Overwatch 2 be an Xbox exclusive?
Overwatch 2 will likely not be an Xbox exclusive as it seems very possible that it will launch before the Activision Blizzard buyout takes place. That deal doesn’t go through until mid-2023.
It also seems very unlikely that any current games as far along in development as Overwatch 2 will have their PlayStation versions pulled, especially as the current release plan is either holiday 2022 or early in 2023.
As a live-service game with ongoing development, things will get even messier as it is very likely Microsoft will not pull an online game with ongoing development such as Overwatch 2 or Call of Duty: Warzone. It’s been two years since Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda, for example, and live-service title Fallout 76 is still available on PS4 and PS5.
While subsequent Blizzard titles such as Diablo 4 may be in danger of being Xbox exclusives, it is probable that Overwatch 2 will remain multiplatform and will release on both PS4 and PS5.
For more on Overwatch, just a few months ago Blizzard changed McCree’s name due to controversy over its origins, and crossplay between all versions of the game finally arrived last year. Despite the Microsoft buyout, it seems very likely that Overwatch 2 will also have crossplay between PC, Xbox, PS4, and PS5 when the game finally launches. Hopefully, fans should finally get to play Overwatch 2 either at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
