Elder Scrolls 6 Release Date: Xbox, PS5, PC, Switch

Few games are as hotly anticipated as The Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda’s previous series release, Skyrim, has become almost legendary since it first launched back in 2011. And in all that time, fans have been waiting patiently to learn more about the sequel. After 10 years, though, questions still remain, even concerning basics like the game’s release date and platforms. Is there any new information in 2022?

Elder Scrolls 6 has not been given a release date, and that’s because it’s still years from launch. As recently as June of 2021, the team at Bethesda said the game was still in the “design phase.” Because the game is so early in development, the developers themselves don’t even know when it will be done, let alone when it might launch.

Of course, the folks at Bethesda haven’t been sitting idly by. They’ve been working on Starfield, a new sci-fi property that is due to launch this coming November. Once Starfield is out, the team will likely still need to focus on post-launch updates and support for a while. Only after the dust has settled on Starfield’s launch will Bethesda be able to focus the bulk of its efforts into The Elder Scrolls 6.

Will Elder Scrolls 6 be on PS5 or Nintendo Switch?

The Elder Scrolls 6 will not release on PlayStation 5 or the Nintendo Switch. It very likely won’t release for anything other than the Xbox Series X/S or PC, since Microsoft owns Bethesda Game Studios, the developers of the game.

It’s a bit of an odd situation, since past Elder Scrolls games have been on PlayStation consoles. Indeed, a PS5 version was assumed when the sixth entry was announced back in 2018. However, times change, and business can become fierce. Microsoft completed purchase of Bethesda in March of 2021, and Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6 would be Xbox and PC exclusive this past November.

As for the Nintendo Switch, well, no one really expected it to release for the plucky little handheld anyway. It might have technically been possible through cloud streaming, thinking optimistically. Either way, those hopes were dashed when the game’s Xbox console exclusivity was confirmed. Fortunately, Switch owners can still check out The Elder Scrolls: Blades.
