Is the Hawkeye episode 6 owl a Marvel easter egg?

Hawkeye episode 6 owl

While the owl has a surprisingly large role in this final episode of Hawkeye, it doesn’t seem like that’s a reference to wider comics lore.

Yes, those who have seen this final episode will know how weird the owl sceme is. It first appears when Clint falls from a tower block into a Christmas tree, as it hoots at Hawkeye, to his bemusement. That’s surprising enough an inclusion, but when the owl reappears, it becomes even more curious. After a battle with the Tracksuit Mafia, Clint and Kate Bishop use a Pym arrow to shrink down a van full of goons. All is well and good as they wonder what these tiny terrors will do now — until the owl reappears to swoop the van away.

It’s a surprising and slightly jarring inclusion that has little bearing on the overarching plot. As such, fans will no doubt ponder its inclusion. While there is a Marvel character called the Owl, it’s unlikely that there’s any crossover here. In the comics, Owl is a supervillain foil to Spider-Man and Daredevil. Real name Leland Owlsley, he created a serum that let him fly.

This character actually appeared in the Daredevil show on Netflix, a season one regular. He was part of Kingpin’s triad of goons, before unceremoniously dying at the hands of Wilson Fisk a few episodes in. For that reason, it seems very unlikely that the Hawkeye episode 6 owl is a nod to Owlsley.
