Sonic Movie 2 Villain: Is Knuckles a bad guy?

Is the Sonic movie 2 villain actually Knuckles the Echidna? The character has been a friend and ally of Sonic for decades in multiple games, cartoons, and even an animated movie, but is Knuckles a bad guy in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie? Now the first official Sonic movie 2 trailer has finally dropped at The Game Awards and it finally gives fans a look at Sonic’s long-time friend Knuckles — in a more adversarial role, it seems.

Is Knuckles the Sonic movie 2 villain?

Sonic movie 2 villain

Knuckles will be a Sonic movie 2 villain, at least for some of the movie. We see Knuckles fighting Sonic in the trailer.

Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) will still likely be the primary villain of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 but Knuckles will probably be his ally at first, before discovering that Robotnik doesn’t have his own interests in mind — at which point Knuckles will switch sides and support Sonic. While it is possible Knuckles could be a full villain in Sonic movie 2, Knuckles is too well-known as Sonic’s friend to stay that way through the entire story.

If correct, Knuckles’ role in the movie will likely mirror his story in his original appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3/Sonic & Knuckles on the SEGA Genesis. In that game, Robotnik steals the Master Emerald, which Knuckles is the guardian of, and blames Sonic for its disappearance. Knuckles attacks Sonic at multiple opportunities before being betrayed by Robotnik. Sonic and Knuckles then team up to defeat Robotnik. The appearance of the Master Emerald in the movie trailer strongly suggests that the film will be retelling the events of the game — which means that Knuckles will start off as a bad guy but will become a good guy by the movie’s end.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie will release on April 8, 2022. Idris Elba will be doing the voice of Knuckles alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails. The Game Awards 2021 also revealed a new trailer for the next game in the series, Sonic Frontiers, which some fans believe is influenced by an Unreal-powered fan demo.
