iPhone 14 always-on display (AOD)

Will there be an iPhone 14 always-on display (AOD) feature?

Android users have been enjoying always-on displays for a while now, though Apple is yet to release an AOD iPhone model. With the iPhone 14 most likely releasing next year, many iOS fans are hoping to see AOD integration next year. But, will there be an iPhone 14 always-on display feature? Here’s the latest on the 2022 Apple iPhone display options.

iPhone 14 AOD: Is there an always-on display setting?

Currently, there are no credible leaks pointing towards iPhone 14 featuring an always-on display (AOD) option. That doesn’t rule out a 2022 iPhone AOD feature, however, as there are no technical limitations that’d prevent it.

Just like the iPhone 13 handset range, Apple iPhone 14 models will most likely feature OLED screens. OLED panels achieve absolute black levels by fully disabling individual pixels; this would allow an always-on display to consume very little battery life. The AOD setting typically allows Android users to display the time, date, and any notifications on-screen at all times without needing to unlock the phone. Apple could implement the same functionality on OLED iPhones without introducing any notable battery drain.

Additionally, Apple Watches already feature an always-on screen setting. This allows the wristwear to display the current time at all times, just like a conventional watch face does. The California tech giant clearly has the means to implement AOD tech, though, for some reason, is yet to extend it to iPhones.

Typically, Apple lets Samsung and other leading Android manufacturers implement new smartphone tech first. iPhone handsets then catch up later, after the features essentially receive market testing elsewhere. Accounting for this cycle, an iPhone 14 Always-on display is well within the realms of possibility.

In other tech news, Microsoft’s Xbox Mini Fridge sold out in minutes. Meanwhile, the Vissles V84 Pro is the best budget hotswappable keyboard and the Samsung 980 Pro SSD is “a finely crafted speed demon.”
