The Back 4 Blood difficulty levels can vastly alter your experience in the newly-released co-op zombie game. Depending on your difficulty level, you’ll tackle undead hordes that could easily take your squad out. In a game so geared around overwhelming numbers of enemies, you need to choose your difficulty wisely. Fear not, as we break down the different Back 4 Blood difficulty levels, to help you see which is best for you. It’ll help answer the question many players have: why is Back 4 Blood so difficult?

What are the Back 4 Blood difficulty levels?

The Back 4 Blood difficulty levels are as follows:

  • Classic
    • Your base health and attacking stats are increased, and the enemy Ridden take less punishment to kill.
    • You regain more health while not in combat, and friendly fire is turned off.
    • You also get two continues, meaning you can retry a level of all of your team die.
  • Survivor
    • More enemies spawn in each horde, and the increased buffs to your health are reduced, back to normal levels.
    • Friendly fire is introduced at this difficulty level, though bullets are 35% less effective against teammates than the Ridden.
    • You also get two continues, to keep the bloodshed going.
  • Nightmare
    • Each player has one less Strike available.
    • Ridden are stronger, with more health and increased attacking potency.
    • You will lose more health when downed, making it more likely you’ll bleed out.
    • Friendly fire is ramped up to 60% efficiency — so aim carefully!
    • Only one continue is available, making it harder to finish levels.

As you can see, there are three difficulty levels available. Interestingly, there is no easy mode for more casual Back 4 Blood players. It’s a challenging game, and the increasingly tough difficulty levels are proof of that.

First is Classic, Back 4 Blood’s equivalent to normal mode. It’s the base level at which you’ll play, which gives players stat buffs not available in later modes. Then there’s Survivor mode, which ramps up the difficulty significantly with more enemies and friendly fire activated. Lastly is Nightmare, which is unsurprisingly a huge challenge to play, giving players one less Strike, more friendly fire, stronger Ridden, and increased friendly fire.
