Korean drama series Squid Game is currently taking Netflix by storm. The nine-episode streaming series sees a group of strangers battle it out in a deadly fight for survival, the winner escaping with a ₩45.6 billion prize. It’s not an unfamiliar concept, though director Hwang Dong-hyuk pulls it off with a unique flair. So, is there going to be a Squid Game 2? Here’s the lowdown on the Squid Game Season 2 release date.
When will Squid Game Season 2 come out?
Squid Game ends on a cliffhanger with a clear tease for a second season. As a result, the Squid Game Season 2 release date could be around September 2022.
Netflix typically releases new seasons of the same show annually, almost exactly a year apart. Since Squid Game hit the popular streaming service in September 2021, if it follows the usual launch schedule, the Squid Game 2 release date could be September 2022.
Although the first season of Squid Game clearly sets up a sequel, according to the director, it might not happen. In an interview with Variety, Dong-hyuk said that he doesn’t have “well-developed plans” for Squid Game Season 2 right now. If the director was to undertake a second season, he’d also need to “consider using a writers’ room” along with “multiple experienced directors” for the production.
While these resources aren’t out of the ordinary — or the director’s reach, owing to the series’ success — it’s a departure from the current production pipeline. Dong-hyuk was the writer and director for all nine episodes of Squid Game, which is almost unheard of. It’s a huge workload that explains why he’d “certainly not do [Squid Game 2] alone.”
