The latest episode of What If? is here, presenting a scenario where Doctor Strange goes down a very different path. Rather than the Sorcerer Supreme we know and love, Steven Strange becomes a malevolent wizard, presented as the episode’s antagonist. While his backstory may be completely different, it’s got Marvel fans asking one thing: does MCU actor Benedict Cumberbatch return to voice Doctor Strange?
Is Benedict Cumberbatch the Doctor Strange voice actor in What If? Episode 4?
Yes, if you recognize Doctor Strange’s voice in this episode, there’s good reason for it. Benedict Cumberbatch returns to voice Steven Strange here, as a big-name return for the show.
Cumberbatch’s return is one of many big MCU names who have lent their voices to What If? so far. Last week’s episode saw Mark Ruffalo return to voice Bruce Banner. However, big names like Robert Downey Jr.and Scarlett Johansson didn’t return to voice their Marvel characters. Therefore, it’s good to see Cumberbatch reprise the role that he first took up in 2016’s Doctor Strange.
In other Marvel media, particularly that not linked to MCU continuity, Doctor Strange is often voiced by Liam O’Brien. He’s handled the Sorcerer Supreme’s voice in games like Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, as well as the recent Spider-Man animated series. However, as an MCU product, it’s good to see Cumberbatch return for What If?
Of course, this isn’t the last we’re going to see — or hear — of Cumberbatch’s Strange this year. The much-anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out in December, and as the recent trailer demonstrated, Doctor Strange has a major role. That’s before considering the upcoming Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, due out in 2022.
