What If? Episode 3: Is Robert Downey Jr. the Iron Man voice actor?

Marvel’s What If? episode 3 briefly features the appearance of Iron Man, with Tony Stark being the catalyst for the series of events that kicks off the latest instalment in the animated series. But with Iron Man returning to this new MCU venture, does that mean Robert Downey Jr. has returned, too? And if not, then who is the new Iron Man voice actor?

Who voices Iron Man in What If? episode 3?

What If?’s Iron Man voice actor is Mich Wingert, meaning that Robert Downey Jr. does not return in the latest episode of the Disney Plus series.

While Robert Downey Jr. is inarguably the most recognizable version of Iron Man, Wingert’s vocal talents will also be recognizable for Marvel fans. The voice actor starred in the Spider-Man, Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy TV series as Iron Man/Tony Stark, having played the role since 2015. He has also appeared in a few video games as the billionaire superhero, such as Marvel Battle Lines.

Robert Downey Jr. hasn’t been seen in a Marvel project since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, closing the character’s story by having him sacrifice himself in order to defeat Thanos. Given that many believe this to be the perfect send-off for Tony Stark in the MCU, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the role anytime soon, even if What If? takes place in an alternate reality.

In What If? episode 3, Tony Stark is murdered in mysterious circumstances before the official rise of The Avengers. After Stark’s death, the murders of the would-be Avengers continues, with the likes of Thor, Black Widow, and The Hulk all meeting their demise, as Loki crashes down on Earth to threaten Nick Fury and the planet as a result of his brother’s death.
