Does Far Cry 6 have a playable third-person mode?

Far Cry 6 is the latest in Ubisoft’s open-world shooter series, and it’s certainly a visual treat. However, dedicated fans may find that the game looks just a bit different than usual. That’s because it’s the first in the franchise to use a third-person perspective. But does that different viewpoint make its way into the action? Does Far Cry 6 include a playable third-person mode?

Does Far Cry 6 have a third-person mode?

No, there is no playable third-person mode in Far Cry 6. Although many cutscenes play out in a third-person perspective, gameplay itself is mostly locked to a first-person viewpoint.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Far Cry has always been a first-person franchise, and it’s doubtful that Ubisoft is keen to mess with its winning formula — beyond adding an adorable puppy and a shirt-wearing alligator, of course. Besides, an over-the-shoulder camera angle would make some of the action feel a bit less visceral.

With that said, Far Cry 6 is the series’ first entry to introduce third-person cutscenes. Much ado was made about this news last year, as some fans saw it as a potential departure from tradition.

This change isn’t about the action, though. Instead, the new perspective is a way to better convey the story through acting. Put another way, it allows a much broader range of performances from motion capture artists.

Still, that’s not to say that everything outside of cutscenes is first-person. Camera perspectives swap when using certain weapons or equipment, notably when firing off the new back-mounted rocket artillery.

Of course, this is also to say nothing of game mods. Far Cry 5 received a third-person mod, and although it’s wonky, it’s workable. The problem is that it’s just not how the game was designed to be played.

Far Cry 6 does use a third-person perspective in cutscenes, but the action is still first-person. While the lack of an over-the-shoulder view may alienate some players, the head-on gameplay does at least stick to the series’ roots.
