Combat in Valheim is meant to be unforgiving, but that doesn’t mean every fight is going to be a challenge. Even in worst-case scenarios, you can block incoming attacks. Still, smart players will quickly learn how to parry. Not only does parrying block damage, but it allows for potentially devastating counterattacks. If you’re still trying to figure out how the system works, we have a few hints that can help.
How to parry attacks in Valheim
To parry in Valheim, press the block button just before an incoming attack lands. As long as you get the timing right, you’ll parry the attack and stun the enemy, leaving it open to counterattack.
When it comes to actually performing this maneuver, timing is key. You need to press the block button (right mouse is the default) just before the incoming attack lands. Press it too soon and you’ll simply block the attack; press it too late, and you won’t block any damage at all.
However, if you time it just right, you’ll hear a clang as the attack is parried. You’ll block incoming damage, stun the enemy, and oftentimes knock them backward, leaving them open for a free hit. Best of all, that free hit will deal extra damage based on the weapon’s parry bonus.
Most weapons in the game carry a parry bonus value. Usually they’ll deal double damage, but some weapons — knives in particular — deal four times as much damage. There’s also a parry force value and, on certain weapons and shields, an additional knockback value. All of these properties determine how effective and powerful parries become.
It’s worth noting that you can’t parry with everything. Some shields, like the wood tower shield, can’t be used parry at all. Instead, they carry a higher block power rating. Parrying also leads to item degradation, so make sure you know how to repair weapons and tools.
Otherwise, you should parry as often as possible. You’re already pressing block for incoming attacks, so try pressing block at the last possible moment. Do it right, and not only will you parry the attack, you’ll leave the enemy open for a devastating counter. For more useful tips, be sure to check out our Valheim beginner’s guide.
