If you’re hoping to be able to get your own boat to drive around in New Horizons, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.

At the moment, there isn’t really any way to get a boat that you can drive around on the ocean. However, there is a way for a boat to visit you in the game — and this ship brings in some mysterious new goodies.
How to get a boat in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 1.2.0 update patch brought with it the return of Redd, a merchant who sells occasionally dodgy goods. You’re going to have to wait for him to actually show up to your island, though.
Here’s how to get a boat in Animal Crossing: New Horizons:
- See if Isabelle announces that a “suspicious character” has been visiting islands in the area.
- Check your map — if you see the above icon on the map, then Redd has arrived!
- Travel to the “secret beach” that is somewhere on the north side of your island. You may need a vaulting pole and a ladder to get there!
- Visit Redd and do your shopping, but be careful — some of his products are bootlegs!
Once Redd has arrived, you can purchase a whole bunch of goodies that can be used to fill up your museum’s Art Gallery.
While Redd is a pretty cool returning feature, there still isn’t a dedicated boat that you can use for other things in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Perhaps Nintendo will add something cool like that in a future update!
