Animal Crossing: New Horizons turnip storage is unfortunately made quite difficult, as you cannot drop them in the places you would any other item. Given that many stock up on the lucrative food item every Sunday before selling them on the Stalk Market, players are inevitably wondering how to store turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
So where’s the best place to put turnips after purchasing them from Daisy Mae, and can you plant turnips before you sell them on to Tommy and Timmy Nook? Let’s take a look.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons turnip storage options
Animal Crossing turnips cannot be placed in your home’s storage, unlike the other items you find in the game. Considering that you can wind up with a surplus of turnips each Sunday, this can be an issue — no one wants an island filled with rogue vegetables, after all.
You have the following options for Animal Crossing: New Horizons turnip storage:
- Creating a ‘turnip garden’
- Placing them in your home
- Burying them in the ground
However, some of these options can be dangerous if you invite friends to your island, as they will be able to pick up the turnips if they are laid on the floor. As such, if you wish to place turnips outside of your home, you will likely need to develop their own enclosure to ensure that no one can up and steal them.
How to store turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons doesn’t feature designated turnip storage, so you’ll need to be creative in terms of where you put the vegetables. Here are your best options:
Place them in your home
This is the easiest option, though isn’t the most convenient. Dropping all of your turnips in your home will prevent other players from being able to pick them up, even if they are classified as Best Friends in your Nook Phone. As such, if you haven’t yet developed a way to store them, this is going to be your go-to method.

However, given that you’re going to want to keep your home nice and stylish for the Happy Home Academy, you aren’t going to want turnips lying around every week. As such, you should seek to develop a more unique makeshift way to house them until you decide to sell them.
Build a turnip garden
The most ideal way to store turnips in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is to create your own ‘turnip garden.’ This will allow you to fence off the pricey vegetables to prevent other players from stealing them, while also giving you access to them when you need them.
It’s by far the most organized way to keep your turnips, giving them their own designated area on your island. In order to build a turnip garden, you will need to do the following:
- Redeem Nook Miles to purchase a fence recipe
- Craft the fence panels
- Store the turnips inside the fencing, and make sure to completely close off this section when you have visitors
- Remove a fence panel to retrieve turnips when you need them
By developing a designated turnip garden, you’ll have an area where you can drop them after you’ve purchased them, while also ensuring that other players won’t be able to nab them in the meantime.
Planting turnips
Unlike fruit, if you bury turnips in the ground they won’t sprout a tree. As such, you can safely bury turnips and leave them there until you need them.
However, Best Friends will be able to dig in your island, meaning that they will also be able to take the turnips if they find them. As such, you should still fence off your buried turnip patch after you’ve created it if you plan to play in multiplayer.
There’s no benefit in burying turnips over just dropping them, as you won’t be able to sprout more turnips from a tree unlike Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ fruit. As such, dropping them is the easier option over burying.
