Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare cross-platform?

The new Modern Warfare game is available across multiple platforms, which begs the obvious question: Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare cross-platform? Yes, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a cross-platform game with support for cross-platform play. The 2019 reboot of Infinity Ward’s iconic FPS game is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and players from any of those three platforms can jump online with players on any of the other supported systems.

Given the current gaming landscape, finding cross-platform play in Modern Warfare is no surprise. What is surprising, however, is that Modern Warfare cross-play requires a distinct Call of Duty account. Even more strange is the fact that in at least one game mode, cross-play must be enabled before jumping into online matches.

Back in October, series fans first learned that Modern Warfare‘s 64-player Ground War required cross-platform play to be enabled. This caused a bit of a row, as it meant that console players were forced to mix with PC players. While cross-play is usually a good thing, this requirement caused a skill discrepancy between those using controllers and those playing on a keyboard and mouse. At the time of writing, Ground War still requires cross-platform play to be enabled.

Otherwise, cross-platform play in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is completely optional. Xbox One or PlayStation 4 players can join matches only with players on their respective platforms if they so choose. PC players, on the other hand, can enable cross-play and likely get a few easy kills on players making use of controller input. Whether or not that’s a good thing is entirely up to you, but at least the cross-play option is available.
