A strange requirement for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players is upsetting fans who bought the game on PS4 and Xbox One. Many were hoping to enjoy the massive 32 vs. 32 Modern Warfare Ground War battles with fellow console players, only to find that the game is telling them that they have to turn cross-play on if they want to enjoy that game mode.
A submission on the /r/PS4 subreddit details the issue. Ground War is a large 64-player game mode that features 32 players on each side. Now, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has sold roughly an entire shipping container’s worth of copies, so there shouldn’t be any problems with finding a match within each console’s ecosystem.

Despite this, the devs behind the game have, for some as-yet-unknown reason, required PS4 players to enable Cross-Play for them to play the Ground War game mode. This, in turn, increases the chances that they’ll be matched up against PC players who are, as a general rule, using keyboard and mice and therefore have an advantage in aiming precision. Take a look at the image below which shows the message PS4 players get when attempting to queue for the Modern Warfare Ground War game mode on the PS4:
“Yes forcing console players to play at a disadvantage against PC isn’t fair, [I] think this could put some people off from these games,” read one complaint on the subreddit.
“Would definitely turn me off,” began a reply. “Its bs playing against [Keyboard and mouse players]when using a controller yet [I] always seem to get hate [every time I] mention it.”
Why Infinity Ward decided to turn on Cross-Play for the Modern Warfare Ground War game mode remains a mystery, but it’s clear that a portion of the players aren’t happy about the decision. There should be plenty of people on the PS4 to not require its use for big battles — hopefully, a patch will come out that gives gamers the option to play Ground War with who they want.
