How to access the Haunted Forest activity in Festival of the Lost 2019

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019

The Haunted Forest activity is a Halloween-themed version of Mercury’s Infinite Forest, introduced in the Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris expansion. The Haunted Forest is accessed via an icon in the Tower destination map (similar to a strike or forge ignition activity) or by interacting with the Haunted Forest mission totem in the Tower Courtyard. When selected from the Tower map, players can choose the standard version of the Forest, which matches them up with two other players, or the Firewalled Haunted Forest, which includes no matchmaking. Entering the activity through the mission totem will automatically put players in the matchmade version.

The Haunted Forest is a timed challenge, giving players 15 minutes to defeat enemies in the randomized “branches” (rooms filled with enemies, basically). The more branches cleared, the more Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins received. What are these collectibles? We’ll cover that next.

How to get and use Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins in Festival of the Lost 2019

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019

Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins are used to purchase various Festival of the Lost-exclusive collectibles during the event. Chocolate Strange Coins can be earned through the Haunted Forest and through Festival Bounties, picked up from holiday event vendor Eva Levante, while Candy is earned only through the Haunted Forest. Chocolate Strange Coins are used to purchase masks from Eva, and Candy is used to purchase Mystery Grab Bags and the Braytech Werewolf from Eva. Bungie warns that both Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins cannot be dismantled individually, so be careful not to accidentally destroy yours, since you’ll lose the entire stack.

Important note: In order to acquire Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins while in the Haunted Forest, you must be wearing the Masquerader’s Helmet. See the next section of this guide for more information on the helmet.

How to equip and unlock masks in Festival of the Lost 2019

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019

Some of Festival of the Lost’s most whimsical cosmetic items are the papercraft-like masks of popular Destiny characters, and this year’s Halloween event brings six non-Eververse masks to the game. The Hidden Swarm Mask (a red Hive Acolyte), Goblin Mask, Mithrax Mask (a Fallen captain), Opulent Calus Mask, and Drifter Mask can all be purchased directly from Eva Levante with Chocolate Strange Coins. An image posted by Bungie also shows an Eris Morn mask, but Bungie did not say how this mask would be obtained.

In order to equip masks, players need to purchase a Masquerader’s Helmet from Eva. The helmets cost only 100 Glimmer and come in Arc, Solar, and Void variants. The helmet does have a power level, but once the event ends, the helmet’s power will disappear, making it purely cosmetic. Equipping purchased masks works like equipping an ornament, but only works on this particular helmet. The helmet’s default appearance is a mask resembling the Tower’s Cryptarch.

Masquerader’s Helmet mods

Three special armor mods are being introduced in this year’s Festival of the Lost. These mods grant huge boosts to players’ powers, but they’re only equippable on the Masquerader’s Helmet and only work while in the Haunted Forest.

  • Higher Purpose
    • Significant damage resistance while airborne.
    • Significantly increased damage to all enemies.
    • Increases the drop chance of Heavy ammo on kill.
  • Vampiric Touch
    • Significantly increased damage to challenging enemies.
    • Precision kills trigger health regeneration.
    • Increases the drop chance of Heavy Ammo on kill.
  • Energetic Assassin
    • Precision kills grant grenade and melee energy.
    • Significantly increased damage to Terrors.
    • Increases the drop chance of Heavy Ammo on kill.

How to get the Braytech Werewolf Auto Rifle in Festival of the Lost 2019

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019

The Braytech Werewolf is this year’s special Festival of the Lost weapon. It resembles the Braytech Winter Wolf Auto Rifle from Destiny 2: Warmind, but with an all-black paint-job, adorned with a glowing blue “X-ray” design. There will be both a regular and Masterworked version of the weapon available for purchase with Candy. The Masterworked version always drops at 950 power — Shadowkeep’s current cap — and there will apparently be some mechanism to acquire random rolls on the weapon.

Along with the cosmetics unlockable with Candy and Chocolate Strange Coins, several items will be available for purchase with Silver in the Eververse Store. Bungie showed off some unnamed, “spooky scary skeleton” armor ornament sets for each class. The Titan’s is covered in a glowing, yellow Cabal skeleton, the Warlocks has a red Hive skeleton, and the Hunter’s appears to have a blue Fallen skeleton. These will likely go for 1500 Silver each, as other legendary armor ornaments sets do, currently.

Two masks will be exclusive to the Eververse: a Hive-like jack-o’-lantern and a Hive Wizard’s head. A new, permanently available version of Destiny 1’s Lost Broom Sparrow returns, along with a Sparrow adorned with the bones of a Cabal warhound. Players can purchase a pterodactyl-like ship in a similar style, and three new Ghost shells — a pumpkin, a papercraft bat, and a triangular Ghost with blue markings similar to the Braytech Werewolf — will be available. Finally, there will be a new emote, showing your character placing a gravestone and sarcastically mourning a fallen Guardian.

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019 Triumphs

Ten new Triumphs will be available for completionists during the festival, including one hidden Triumph. Bungie has not said whether or not completing these will provide any reward (though perhaps it could give players that missing Eris Morn mask). The full list is available here.

Can you get old Festival of the Lost gear during Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019?

Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2019

While Bungie did not say whether or not previous Festival of the Lost gear can be obtained during this year’s event, it seems likely they’ll show up in the Eververse or in the Mystery Grab Bags. A dataminer on Reddit found some evidence that 2018’s Festival of the Lost armor sets could come back, but it’s unknown if this will actually come to pass, since Bungie confirmed some of the dataminer’s information was incorrect. Bungie did note that old Festival mask could be equipped as ornaments on the Masquerader’s Helmet, but it’s not known if they can be obtained by players who missed them the first time.
