Swipe as quickly as you can from the start. Getting used to swiping quickly is the number one way to win on a consistent basis in the later rounds, because some of the combinations are so long that if you take too long to complete the combination, time will run out on you before you finish it, dragging your score down.
Always try to keep focused on the entire screen, rather than just part of it, because it is very easy to miss something as you go.
