God of War, as of writing, is a purely single-player experience meaning (light spoilers here, I guess) you’ll be playing as Kratos and only Kratos throughout the entirety of the adventure.
While the game does need to be online to download patches to improve the overall quality of the game (including a 6.2GB day one patch), there are no other online components to speak off within the game.
Can You Play as Atreus in God of War?
Kratos’ son Atreus plays a massive role in God of War. However, his companionship is AI-only, in much the same way Ellie was in The Last of Us, or Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite. God of War does not have any split-screen features. In fact, the game’s camera would make that a near-impossibility as it utilises the latest in technology to craft a camera that shifts seamlessly from gameplay to in-engine cutscenes and back again without a single cut. Having a split-screen mode would hinder that.
Is There Competitive or Co-Op Multiplayer in God of War?
While God of War has previous with co-op multiplayer having included a co-op Trial of the Gods mode in God of War Ascension, as well as more traditional, competitive modes, but that is nowhere to be found in God of War.
