Myst 3: Exile Myst III: Exile Walkthrough

Myst III: Exile Walkthrough v0.7
-----------------------------------------

Greetings all. Welcome to my Myst III: Exile walkthrough. If you're
reading this, you've probably gotten stuck on one of the many puzzles that
this game features. Just so you know, I've written this walkthrough
from my own experience with the game. I didn't use any strategy
guides or any outside help, so if something is blaring incorrect, it's
my fault... ;)

This walkthrough will be presented in a Q/A type scenario, with increasing
levels of spoiler. That is, if you get stuck on a puzzle and only want a
hint, this will provide it for you. If you are still stuck on a puzzle,
and want the solution, you will just need to read further down. The
questions and answers will be labeled according to the level of spoiler.

There will be a *HINT* section to each question, which can be read without
giving too much of the puzzle away. It will not contain any direct
solutions, just try to give some insight into what you should do to solve
the puzzle.

There will be a *SPOILER* section to each question, which will tell you
how the puzzle works. It explains what you need to do in order to go
about solving the puzzle, without actually telling you where to go and
what exactly to do. Read this if you just want to get by the puzzle
but want to figure out exactly what to do on your own.

There will be a *SOLUTION* section to each question, which will basically
be the solution to the puzzle. It tells you exactly what you need to
do, click by click in order to solve the puzzle. Only read this if you
are absolutely stumped.

If there are any omissions or incorrect material, please feel free to
e-mail corrections to hitmanNO@SPAManivcd.tv. (Obviously remove the NO
SPAM to e-mail me).

That all being said, let's get on with the walkthrough!

=======

This is where our game begins. Nothing much to do here except walk inside
and find the book of Raleeshahn. Snoop around to trigger the cut scene
until you are transported to J'Nanin.

First World (J'Nanin)
=====================

This world serves as the linking world to the 4 other worlds that you are
going to visit. You enter this world chasing a guy with long hair and a
high voice (Saavedro) who stole Atrus' linking book to Raleeshahn.

***************************************************************************
                                  HINTS
***************************************************************************

Q) Where do I start?

A) As with any Myst game, always start by exploring whatever world you
are dropped into. Walk around, look at the scenery, play with things that
you can click on (because they will probably open up something later on,
or be a part of a puzzle), and basically get the feel of the lay of the
land. Keep in mind, with the 360 degree rotation, sometimes things will
be lying at your feet or up above your head. This is especially the case
for finding ladders, which I found extremely difficult at times.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with all the multi-colored "telescope" type dealies
   all over the island?

A) These telecopes, when properly configured, will unlock one of the
big white "horns" you see on the island. Take a look through each one of
them from each side to see where they are pointed, and try turning them to
see where you can aim them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found a ladder I can climb down, but there is a big metal
ball blocking the way to the door. What do I need to do?

A) You need to find a way to move the ball! Try looking around the
area that you found the ladder. Don't forget to search up AND down using
   the 360 degree rotation!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I solve the metal ball puzzle?

A) You need to operate the two levers in front of you, which cause the
walkway to change shape and therefore the ball to roll around.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found another door in a "horn" that I can't quite reach (there
is no walkway). How do I get to this door?

A) Try looking around (below) the area here. You might want to try to
play around with the plant and notice what kind of things you hear when you
aim it at different locations. You also might want to note what kind of
things you can look at through the "eyes" of the plant. Might be worth
   looking into.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm in the building at the bottom of the gorge, but there are gates
   blocking my way. Help?

A) Um, look around.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've gone up the elevator in the building, confronted Saavedro, but am
stuck. I can't figure out how to get into the room beyond the
   elevator!

A) Try looking around Saavedro's study, including the area where the
elevator is. Leave no stone unturned.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I can't figure out how to rig the elevator. There are 4 controls, but
I don't know what to do.

A) If you didn't search Saavedro's study, I'd recommend doing so now.
You might find a hint or two around.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Saavedro gave me his shpiel about finding the three symbols. What are
the three symbols he is talking about and what do I do when I've found
   them?

A) Search around the room where the Narayan book is trapped. You'll
see three camera-devices. You should fiddle around with these and see
what things you can see through them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What do I do with the symbols once I've found them?

A) Try mimicing what Saavedro did with his symbol.

***************************************************************************
                                 SPOILERS
***************************************************************************

Q) Where do I start?

A) This is the linking world, where all the other worlds are linked from.
You will be solving puzzles on this world in order to unlock the
linking books to get you to the other worlds. There are three worlds
(Voltaic, Amateria, and Edanna) you must traverse before you can link to
   the final showdown in Narayan.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with all the multi-colored "telescope" type dealies
   all over the island?

A) There are 7 of these telescopes situated throughout the island
(and one post where the telescope was broken off - not important). You
must travel to the far side of the island (down to and over the beach from
where you start) until you get to the area with a 4 handle wheel, an orb
sitting in the ocean, and a red disc. This is where you should start
aligning the telescopes. After you are through aligning them, make a note
what order the light hits the telescopes in (by color).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I solve the metal ball puzzle?

A) You must first manipulate the controls so the ball moves to the
right of the ladder. Leave the puzzle, climb down the ladder, and open
the door. You must then go back to the controls, and manipulate them so
that the ball rolls into the room beyond.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found another door in a "horn" that I can't quite reach (there
is no walkway). How do I get to this door?

A) The plant serves as a sound amplifier for whatever you have it
aimed at. Note the little animal burrow to the right of the building
that you can see at the bottom of the gorge.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm in the building at the bottom of the gorge, but there are gates
   blocking my way. Help?

A) Um, look around.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I can't figure out how to rig the elevator. There are 4 controls, but
I don't know what to do.

A) Make sure you grab Saavedro's journal off his hammock, and be
sure to read the entire way through it. The solution is inside.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Saavedro gave me his shpiel about finding the three symbols. What are
the three symbols he is talking about and what do I do when I've found
   them?

A) The three cameras point in the general direction of the three
"horns" that you see around the island. Each of these horns has a symbol
on it (not the symbol you are looking for). You need to focus on the
symbols with the controls, and make note of the camera settings used.

***************************************************************************
                                 SOLUTIONS
***************************************************************************

Q) What is the deal with all the multi-colored "telescope" type dealies
   all over the island?

A) Go to the end of the island as said above. Turn the wheel until
the sunlight is mirrored off the orb, into the red disc. Now go to the
yellow telescope to the left. Turn it once. Travel to the beach, and
back up the ladder to the blue telescope. Turn the telescope once, to
point to the green telescope. Go back to the beach, and to the right of
the ladder to where you start. You will walk across a few rocks (in
water). Navigate your way down into the gorge, an across two bridges,
then up some stairs until you see the green telescope. Turn it once to
point to the red telescope. Go directly across to the red telescope, and
turn it twice to point to the yellow one. Now head back across the
bridges to the yellow telescope. Turn it twice to point to the purple
one. Now go to the purple one. Turn the purple one once to point to the
red telescope (note: this is a different red one). Lastly, head to the
red one. Turn it once and it will direct the light to the white
horn. Head back down to the beach and up to where you started the whole
process. Head past the broken telescope, and up to the white horn where
the light SHOULD be hitting now (causing a kaleidiscope of colors). You
must now punch in the colors in the order of the telescopes. This order
is: Yellow, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Purple, Red. This will open the
   door.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found a ladder I can climb down, but there is a big metal
ball blocking the way to the door. What do I need to do?

A) To the right of the ladder, a few steps back there is a ladder
going down the side of the rock. Climb down this ladder to visit the
   metal ball puzzle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I solve the metal ball puzzle?

A) Go to the controls (on the far end of the stone, down the
ladder). Push the left lever, then the right lever. This will cause the
ball to move under the ladder. Push the left lever, then the right lever
again. Now you must go to the ladder, climb down, and open the door. Go
back to the controls. Push the left lever twice, then the right
lever. This will cause the ball to roll into the room, plugging the hole
in the floor. Push the right lever again to straighten up the floor.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found another door in a "horn" that I can't quite reach (there
is no walkway). How do I get to this door?

A) Climb down into the gorge, and to the right of the building,
where you see the small animal burrow. Click on the plant to the right of
the burrow to cause it to flatten out. Now click on the top of the
burrow, causing a small animal to come out and feed on the red spores to
the right. Climb back up to the plant you can aim. Aim it at the area
where the animal is feeding on the spores (it is behind the V shaped
rocks.. you can't quite see it). If you have it correctly aimed, you will
hear the animal making noises. The spores to your left now grow out, and
you can walk across them to access the door now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm in the building at the bottom of the gorge, but there are gates
   blocking my way. Help?

A) Can't get any easier than this. Click on the lever in front of
you to open the gates, walk through them, turn around and push the button,
and it will open the gates behind you. Are you sure you should be playing
   this game? ;-)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've gone up the elevator in the building, confronted Saavedro, but am
stuck. I can't figure out how to get into the room beyond the
   elevator!

A) Leave the elevator, and turn around. You can pull the lever
from outside, causing the elevator to go back up, and allowing you to look
   into the area below it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I can't figure out how to rig the elevator. There are 4 controls, but
I don't know what to do.

A) The diagrams to how you are to set the controls are in
Saavedro's journal. On the gears, you must rotate them around until the
"notch" in the top gear is pointing directly at one of the sprockets of
the bottom gear. On the weights, you must move the left weight to the
bottom position, and the middle and right weights to the middle
position. On the flywheel, you must turn two of the weights so that the
side with the 3 lines on it are facing outwards, then spin the thing
around until the one that you didn't touch (with the 3 lines on it are
facing inwards) is facing you. On the fourth and final machine, you must
simply click it so that the lever is engaged on the gears at the bottom,
not the top. Now climb out and call the elevator back, jump in, and ride
it up. Saavedro has fled to Narayan and the book is now locked away.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Saavedro gave me his shpiel about finding the three symbols. What are
the three symbols he is talking about and what do I do when I've found
   them?

A) Each of the cameras points to a seperate symbol. You must align
the symbol on the camera with the symbol you see on the horn. The left
lever controls zoom, the right controls focus. It is a trial-and-error
type thing, but you want to get as close to size and location (and then
focus in) to get the right settings. You then make note of these settings
(the bead locations) and then travel to the location you were looking at,
dial them into the pedestal inside, and push the center button to unlock
the linking book to the next world.

The diagram below represents the approximate location the beads should be
placed. The number represents which bead. (1 is the innermost, 4 is the
outermost). Note that I am placing them as far out on the diagram as
possible so you can see the relative location.

NOTE: You may have to tinker around a bit before finding the
"perfect" settings, but these worked for me. Once you have them set, hit
the center button which will unlock the linking book.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What do I do with the symbols once I've found them?

A) Place the symbols on the table as you find them. This will
bring up a cut scene for each one. After you have put all three on the
table, you will be able to access the book of Narayan and give chase to
   Saavedro.

Voltaic
=======

Voltaic is a dusty world of sand and sky, water and wind; a place where
strange obviously manmade constructions poke out of an otherwise dry and
desolate landscape.

Q) I've arrived on Voltaic, but nothing at all seems to work! The place
is dead. How do I restore power?
Q) There is a red door I can't open. How do I open it?
Q) OK, I've started the turbine, opened the airlock near the generator,
and have come to a big room with a big cylinder in the center. What do
   I need to do here?
Q) I've found what looks like an airship, but the controls nearby won't
respond. All I hear are some muted hissing noises. Where do I need to
   go?
Q) I am in a room with some controls, a ladder leading down, and a door
below that, but there is liquid hot magma all over the place and I
   can't open the hatch!
Q) I'm not sure what to do when I get into the room where the lava was.
Q) The steam is turned on. What in the !*@*%* do I do with these stupid
   steam vent controls??
Q) I've filled the balloon, but he contraption gets trapped at the dome.
What do I need to do to open it?
Q) How do I finish the level?

***************************************************************************

Q) I've arrived on Voltaic, but nothing at all seems to work! The place
is dead. How do I restore power?

A) Look around where you first start. Notice anything there seems to
be a lot of? Water. So maybe you should use this to your advantage.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q) OK, I've started the turbine, opened the airlock near the generator,
and have come to a big room with a big cylinder in the center. What do
   I need to do here?

A) This is where the power is distributed to the island. Right now, it
is disabled. You need to fix the circuits so that power gets to every
   location.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found what looks like an airship, but the controls nearby won't
respond. All I hear are some muted hissing noises. Where do I need to
   go?

A) Try looking around the airship and the controls. Don't forget to
   look UP!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am in a room with some controls, a ladder leading down, and a door
below that, but there is liquid hot magma all over the place and I
   can't open the hatch!

A) Try manipulating the controls, see what they do.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm not sure what to do when I get into the room where the lava was.

A) Try manipulating the controls, see what they do.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) The steam is turned on. What in the !*@*%* do I do with these stupid
   steam vent controls??

A) You need to manipulate the steam vents so that the dial reaches
"optimum" temperature, shown by the red line. Be sure to note the handle
to your left which controls the level of your controls.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've filled the balloon, but he contraption gets trapped at the dome.
What do I need to do to open it?

A) Try searching around a bit...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I finish the level?

A) It's pretty simple.. just keep looking around for levers to pull and
   doors to enter...

***************************************************************************
                                 SPOILERS
***************************************************************************

Q) I've arrived on Voltaic, but nothing at all seems to work! The place
is dead. How do I restore power?

A) The entire island is powered by hydroelectric power. You need to
restore this. Some of the tunnels that you walk through are actually
water turbines. Make sure to check the walls, windows, and everything for
   clues.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) OK, I've started the turbine, opened the airlock near the generator,
and have come to a big room with a big cylinder in the center. What do
   I need to do here?

A) You need to examine each of the five sides of the cylinder to see
the "circuit board". There are 3 rows of circuits. You must align them
in such a way that every row is touching (on all five sides of the
cylinder). If you change the setting on one side, it changes it on all
sides. Try aligning the top and the bottom first, then go for the middle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm not sure what to do when I get into the room where the lava was.

A) The controls move the platform up and down, as well as move the
gears to the other side of the platform so you can move even further up
and down. Don't forget to check the end fo the platform when you reach
   certain heights.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) The steam is turned on. What in the !*@*%* do I do with these stupid
   steam vent controls??

A) There are 3 levels of controls (height) that you can
manipulate. In order to reach the different levels, enough pressure must
be built up. If the needle is in the red zone, you can visit all 3
levels. If it is in the yellow, you can only visit the bottom 2. If it
is in the blue, you can only visit the bottom level. You must adjust the
different levels so that the needle hits right on the red line. The
valves on the top level change the pressure by 1 mark. The valves on the
second level change the pressure by 4 marks, while the valves on the
bottom change the pressure by 10 marks.

***************************************************************************

                                 SOLUTIONS
***************************************************************************

Q) I've arrived on Voltaic, but nothing at all seems to work! The place
is dead. How do I restore power?

A) From where you start, walk toward the canyon. Hang a right into
the caverns. Follow this path all the way until you get to a ladder on
your left and a display on your right. (Be sure to pick up some of
Saavedro's notes on the ground on your way in - gives you some insight
into the mind of this loonie). Climb the ladder and turn the red wheel at
the top. Climb back down and continue down the passage to the big airlock
door (you can't enter it yet). Climb down the ladder, hit the red button,
move forward and turn the crank to engage the rotor. Go back up the
ladder and back to the tunnel where the display and ladder is. Notice on
the right side, you see portals. Go to the last portal on your right,
look at it. You can flip the fins out, which then starts the turbine
moving. Congratulations, you've halfway solved the power problem. The
airlock can now be unlocked and opened.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) There is a red door I can't open. How do I open it?

A) You don't. You come out it later on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) OK, I've started the turbine, opened the airlock near the generator,
and have come to a big room with a big cylinder in the center. What do
   I need to do here?

A) The solution is actually very easy once you figure out what the
puzzle is. Go up to any of the circuit boards and click in the following
order: Move the upper row twice to the right. Move the middle row once
to the right. Move the bottom row five times to the right. Power has
been restored everywhere. Also make sure to search the room for more of
   Saavedro's notes on the ground.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found what looks like an airship, but the controls nearby won't
respond. All I hear are some muted hissing noises. Where do I need to
   go?

A) There is a ladder to the left of the controls, climb up it to
the top and head on through across the steam tube. Be sure to pick up
more of Saavedro's notes on the ground. You will need to then climb into
another tube, and drop down into a room with some controls.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am in a room with some controls, a ladder leading down, and a door
below that, but there is liquid hot magma all over the place and I
   can't open the hatch!

A) Move the control rod up, and release. It will drop the platform
down as well as the magma. You can then enter the room through the hatch
   below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm not sure what to do when I get into the room where the lava was.

A) Move the lever down once, then directly over to the left,
relocating the gears. Move the lever down again. Go to the end of the
platform and hit the switch, turning on the steam venting system. Go back
to the controls. Move the lever up, to the right, then up again. Exit
the room and go back to the controls, moving the lever so that the lava
rises again. You have successfully turned on the steam generation system.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) The steam is turned on. What in the !*@*%* do I do with these stupid
   steam vent controls??

A) Pull the lever to your left forward, so you go up a level. Turn
three of the vents so the needle gets in the red zone. Now pull the lever
forward again, taking you to the top level. Turn one of the wheels, then
pull the lever backward, taking you to the second level. Turn one of the
wheels you previously turned, bringing the needle to point directly
between the red and yellow sections. Pull the lever backward to take you
to the first level. Turn the far left three wheels (you cant turn the
right one, and don't need to), which should bring the needle right onto
the red line. Go to where the ladder on the left is, and turn the red
wheel there which will fill the balloon.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've filled the balloon, but he contraption gets trapped at the dome.
What do I need to do to open it?

A) Go back toward the start of the level (climbing up the
ladder). When you get a chance, go left on the path which curves around
the tower. Enter the elevator and pull the handle. Go to the end of the
path and pull the handle at the end, which will open the dome and free the
vehicle. Enter the vehicle, pull the lever, and prepare for a ride!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I finish the level?

A) After the balloon ride, pull the lever on the platform, which
causes the building to levitate. Go back into the balloon, pull the lever
again, then go to the door and open it. All you need to do is climb down
the hole, open the airlock at the bottom (which causes you to get the
symbol for this world), then look up and open the drawer in front of you,
which exposes the J'Nanin book. Congratulations, you've conquered
   Voltaic.

***************************************************************************

Q) Right off the bat, I'm already stuck. Where do I go?

A) Try playing with the plantlife on this level. Each of them has its
own specific purpose. I found the paths VERY hard to find on this level
as they are often on vines and trees and are not very distinct. Try
clicking all over the place if you are stupmed and don't know where to go
next. Chances are you just missed a walkway somewhere to the next part of
   a puzzle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) There is another one of those "staircase" plants, but it doesn't look
too happy (it's wilted and doesn't work). How do I make it flourish?

A) Try looking around. The plants in this world are often used
together in order to function properly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with the electrical manta-ray?

A) Electricity.... The manta ray's power could be used somewhere else
   perhaps?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am standing on the extended leaf, but I can't reach anywhere. What
   do I need to do?

A) Try looking up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am at the "animal trap" contraption, and can trap the animal, but
what good does it do me? (Or, I can't figure the *!@* thing out)

A) Maybe the objective isn't to trap the animal...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with the electrical manta-ray? (continued)

A) Read above for hints...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found some white lily-looking flowers. What are their importance?

A) You can try looking through them to see what you can aim them at.
Some of them might be of use.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've reached another one of those rolling out bridge leaves, but this
time there is no light nearby to make it extend. What do I need to do?

A) Try another source for light...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I free the bird?

A) You need to somehow get that plant to open up and release your pal,
the bird. Maybe it needs something that would be a SHOCK to its system...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I found another one of the "sun blaster" plants, and another lily white
reflector flower. What do I need to do with these?

A) Again, these things don't work without sunlight. You've already
found a source of sunlight already... Why not try to use that?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found some BIG bloomin' onion looking plant with "feelers" on top,
and another one surrounded by insects but I have *NO* idea what to do
   now!

A) This is the big puzzle for the map. It ties a bunch of different
seemingly unrelated things together. Keep your head on straight and just
   explore.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Okay, the bird came and got me. What now?

A) How did you GET this far?! Go back to playing DOOM.

***************************************************************************
                                 SPOILERS
***************************************************************************

Q) There is another one of those "staircase" plants, but it doesn't look
too happy (it's wilted and doesn't work). How do I make it flourish?

A) The flower above concentrates sun into a searing hot ray,
shooting it at a designated target. You just need to provide the
sunlight. Aim the sunlight beam at the big bulbous plant in order to feed
   the "staircase" plant.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with the electrical manta-ray?

A) You need to move the manta ray further down into the tree. You
can accomplish this by using the plants along the way to syphon the manta
ray inside them at different locations.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am at the "animal trap" contraption, and can trap the animal, but
what good does it do me? (Or, I can't figure the *!@* thing out)

A) Try moving the fruit before you spring the trap...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found some white lily-looking flowers. What are their importance?

A) These flowers act kind of like the telescopes from the first
world. You use them to reflect light to various places. Try playing
around with where you can aim them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've reached another one of those rolling out bridge leaves, but this
time there is no light nearby to make it extend. What do I need to do?

A) Use the lily flowers to reflect light onto the bridge leaf to activate
   it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I free the bird?

A) You need to electrocute the plant using the manta ray.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I found another one of the "sun blaster" plants, and another lily white
reflector flower. What do I need to do with these?

A) You need to aim the flowers in such a way that you can direct the
original ray of sunlight (from above) into the sunblaster plant. Notice
   where the sunblaster is aimed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found some BIG bloomin' onion looking plant with "feelers" on top,
and another one surrounded by insects but I have *NO* idea what to do
   now!

A) There are several parts to this puzzle. Start off by finding the
plant that has the insects buzzing around it. You need to scare off those
insects first. After that, you need to cause the other large
onion-looking-plant to open up and sprout. Once you have done that, you
need to go back to the old plant, climb into the blue stamen (grab the
notes inside), and up to the top. Release some spores and you are home
   free.

***************************************************************************
                                 SOLUTIONS
***************************************************************************

Q) Right off the bat, I'm already stuck. Where do I go?

A) Go to the plant at the end of the path that looks like a
circular staircase. If you click on it, it will throw you up higher into
   the tree.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) There is another one of those "staircase" plants, but it doesn't look
too happy (it's wilted and doesn't work). How do I make it flourish?

A) Go to the top where there is a flower and a vine plant. Click
on the center of the plant to move the vines out of the way of the
sunlight. Go to the flower, look through it, and concentrate the ray of
sun on the big bulbous vine to the left of the leaf basin. It will
explode, filling the basin with water and causing the "staircase" plant to
   grow (and function).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with the electrical manta-ray?

A) Go down to the left of the manta ray, to the plant with the
"claws" on the front and the red bulb. Click on the bulb, which will suck
the manta ray down inside it. Continue further down (More of Saavedro's
notes along the way) until you cross over a bridge. Pull the bottom of
the plant (like a light bulb) causing it to turn on and the leaf to roll
out. This puzzle is continued later on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am standing on the extended leaf, but I can't reach anywhere. What
   do I need to do?

A) Look up at the end of the leaf, and grab onto the vine. You can
then swing over to the white dome looking contraption.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I am at the "animal trap" contraption, and can trap the animal, but
what good does it do me? (Or, I can't figure the *!@* thing out)

A) Click on the lever to roll the cage up. Go over to the cage and
shake the fruit plant to drop a piece of fruit. Click the piece of fruit
on the ground to move it out of the way of the trap. Now go to the right
of the lever, and slide down. Go back to where the leaf extended with the
light, and look to your right. The animal will get the fruit outside of
the trap. Pull the handle to trigger the trap, which will miss the animal
who will run to the bridge. The noise the animal makes causes the spores
to grow (deja vu?) and the bridge to drop. Now go grab the vine again and
swing over to the platform beyond where the bridge used to be.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deal with the electrical manta-ray? (continued)

A) After swinging down the vine, travel down further into the tree
and you will see another one of the manta-holder plants by a
nice painting. Activate it. Now go further down below past the painting
into the green area, and you will find another manta-holder. Activate
   this, the final one.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found some white lily-looking flowers. What are their importance?

A) Go to the far flower (from the painting) by going down, past 2
of the flowers (one of them you cannot aim) and then up to the sunlight
flower. Use this to reflect the sun to the other flowers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've reached another one of those rolling out bridge leaves, but this
time there is no light nearby to make it extend. What do I need to do?

A) Climb to the "sunlight" flower at the top (see above) and aim it
at the white lily to the left. Climb down to that white lily, and aim it
at the bridge leaf. You can now climb down (near the painting) and cross
   the leaf.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) How do I free the bird?

A) If you have gotten the manta ray as far as it can go (into the
manta-holder plant below the painting in the green area) read the solution
   directly below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I found another one of the "sun blaster" plants, and another lily white
reflector flower. What do I need to do with these?

A) Go to the lily flower above the sunblaster flower. Aim the lily
flower at the sunblaster flower. Go ALL the way back to the first flower
that is catching the sunlight. (Oh, by the way, there are more of
Saavedro's notes inside the tree trunk on your way down, but of course you
picked them up on the way up, right??) Aim this flower at the one to the
upper right of the one its currently aimed at (the one you cannot
move). If you have everything lined up properly, and the manta ray is in
the final manta-holder plant, it should explode, releasing the manta ray
into the pool below. The manta ray will electrocute the plant, causing it
to open and release the bird. Make sure you re-aim the flower back to the
other one, so the bridge plant will be extended.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've found some BIG bloomin' onion looking plant with "feelers" on top,
and another one surrounded by insects but I have *NO* idea what to do
   now!

A) First things first. Go to the plant with the insects buzzing
around it. Climb on the path around the plant (there are a couple of
white-flowered vines on the way) to where there is another one of the
plants that looks like the one that was blocking the sunlight
earlier. Click on the center of it, and it will block the sunlight from
the top of the plant. Go back down to the bottom of the plant. Click on
the spore at the base of the plant to spit out some seeds which repel the
insects from this plant. You now need to cause the other plant (the one
that the insects now surround) to sprout. Go up the path from the other
plant, until you are on the main path again. Go the opposite direction
from where you swung down on the vine, and you will come to another lily
sunlight-reflector flower. Aim this at the big onion to cause it to
open. Now head back down to the other plant (that you drove the insects
away from earlier). Go to the blue stamen (vine) with a hole in
it. Enter the hole and climb up the plant. Be sure to grab more of
Saavedro's notes. Once you get to the top, give the ol' plant a tickle
and you are off! (Assuming you freed the bird).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Okay, the bird came and got me. What now?

A) Click on the outside of the plant, and slide
down. Congratulations, you found your next symbol, and at the end of the
path is the book back to J'Nanin.

Q) I am at a machine that looks like a big balance. What do I need to do?

A) You should explore around to maybe try to get a better bird's eye
view of the situation. After that, you should look around to see if you
can find something to counterbalance with.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm at a machine with two rotating hex shapes, and controls that have
three red pegs and holes to put the pegs in. I don't get it!

A) Take a look at how the machine is built. There are holes that the
ball can fall through, and holes that the ball will be "launched
from". You need to figure out a way to get the ball launched back onto
   the track to the right.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've reached a part where there are five weird force fields at
different points on a track, with controls by each of them. How do I
   get past this part?

A) Try getting a birds eye view of the situation. Look around near the
painting in the building for a way to get a little higher up on the
situation. The controls for this puzzle aren't immediately apparent.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) There are three platforms missing in front of me, and a hexagonal
control panel. What do I need to do?

A) You need to solve the other three puzzles located around the island
to get the keys to this puzzle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've watched Saavedro's rant about his wife after sitting down in the
chair inside the globe. What now?

A) Try looking around.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Ok, I'm at a puzzle with a 3x3 arrangement of circles for the
controls. I can rotate the pieces, but what good does it do me? What
   do I need to do?

A) Again, try looking around after you've messed with the
controls. This puzzle ties together all the other ones you have
solved. You will find the trigger for this puzzle if you search hard
   enough.

***************************************************************************
                                 SPOILERS
***************************************************************************

Q) I am at a machine that looks like a big balance. What do I need to do?

A) This is a weights problem. You have two weights involved, the
red ball that is triggered, and the counter weight (the one you put
together in the building). The solution is that you need to find the
correct configuration of pivot position, and counter-balance weight so
that when the red ball weighs the balance down, the counter-balance
correctly counters the red ball so that the balance is even for the
crystal ball to move across it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm at a machine with two rotating hex shapes, and controls that have
three red pegs and holes to put the pegs in. I don't get it!

A) The controls represent the position of the machine. You need to
place red pegs in the holes on the controls to cause the machine to stop
rotating and attempt to shoot the ball to the other side (where hopefully
another bin is, or the hole leading to the track on the right). The
machine stops rotating when a red peg is in the bottom position on the
   controls.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've reached a part where there are five weird force fields at
different points on a track, with controls by each of them. How do I
   get past this part?

A) You need to set the controls on each of the force fields to turn
off as the ball approaches it. To do so, you need to find the controls
above the painting room (look for a stone ladder in the left wall down the
hall). Once you find this, you can get a birds eye view of the
puzzle. If you click on the blue dot on the controls, you can see how the
force fields turn off. You can either match the puzzle pieces up with the
shapes on the force field, or trial-and-error it until you get the ball
all the way through (I found the latter much easier to do).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Ok, I'm at a puzzle with a 3x3 arrangement of circles for the
controls. I can rotate the pieces, but what good does it do me? What
   do I need to do?

A) You need to route the ball throughout the other 3 puzzles you've
already beaten (Green, Yellow, and Blue) so that the platforms will raise
at the Red side. To do so, you need to figure out a way of rotating the
puzzle pieces so they fit together and let the ball travel between the
different puzzles. If you look on the outside of the controls, you see
the four colors. The "Symbol" part of each of the sides is where the ball
can travel in, and it will travel out the tail end (where the arrow is
pointing out). You need to route through the Green, Yellow and Blue
symbols and end up at the Red one. If you hit the green button above you,
it will start the ball at the green arrow, and so on.

***************************************************************************
                                 SOLUTIONS
***************************************************************************

Q) I am at a machine that looks like a big balance. What do I need to do?

A) First, go to the hut where the counter weights are stored. You
need to put two brown weights (wood) and one black weight (obsidian?) onto
the counter balance. Now go out to the machine controls and pull the
lever. You want the pivot position to be on the far left, so hit the top
lever. Then pull the lever on the right and watch the ball roll across
   the balance unscathed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I'm at a machine with two rotating hex shapes, and controls that have
three red pegs and holes to put the pegs in. I don't get it!

A) You need all three red pegs. Pull the lever to move the
controls in the air. Place the pegs in the following position (X
   represents a peg):

      _______ _______
     / / / /
    / X / / /
   / / X / X /
   |-----------| |-----------|
       / / / /
      / / / /
     /_____/ /_____/

Then pull the lever and away the machine goes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've reached a part where there are five weird force fields at
different points on a track, with controls by each of them. How do I
   get past this part?

A) This one is difficult to explain since they all look the
same. Go up to the control deck and pull the handle to raise the
platform. It will give you a birds eye view of the situation. I will
refer to the force fields in this fashion:

          3 4
     2 5
           X
   1

X is the center of the whole mess (the hut you can walk through to get to
all the force fields. If you look at one of the force field control
panels, it basically is set up like this:

        B
      A C
      *   D
        E

Where * is the empty location. What you need to do, is change the
settings on each of the force fields so that it matches the following
   layout:

          3A 4C
     2D 5E
           X
   1B

So that means, you would go to force field "1" (see above) and change the
dial so that it points to the topmost puzzle piece "B".

Once you have done this, go up to the controls, hit the lever to raise the
platform, then pull the lever to see if everything is set right. If the
ball explodes, go fix the field it exploded at.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) There are three platforms missing in front of me, and a hexagonal
control panel. What do I need to do?

A) Below are the hex solutions to this puzzle. I will reference
   the following diagram:

           1
     2 3 4 5
       6 7 8
     9 A B C
           D

which somewhat resembles the controls you need to push. Below are the
combinations you need to enter. IE: if it says 123, you need to make sure
1, 2, and 3 are pushed down, and none other.

   Puzzle 1: 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, C, D
   Puzzle 2: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, C, D
   Puzzle 3: 3, 4, 6, 9, B, C, D

You can now cross and enter the final puzzle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I've watched Saavedro's rant about his wife after sitting down in the
chair inside the globe. What now?

A) Look directly up. Pull the handle.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Ok, I'm at a puzzle with a 3x3 arrangement of circles for the
controls. I can rotate the pieces, but what good does it do me? What
   do I need to do?

A) I will break down the controls into the following arrangement:

      1 2 3
      4 5 6
      7 8 9

To solve this puzzle, you must click on the pieces in the following order:

   2, 3, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9. Then back away from the controls, and look behind
you and hit the blue button. Prepare for a great
animation. Congratulations, you've found your final symbol.

A) Don't feel bad. This was the first puzzle that gave me any trouble
on this game. It took me forever to figure it out. What you need to do
is look back to what you've found throughout the whole game. Atrus'

Q) Okay, I'm here but I'm already stumped. What is the deal with the
symbols and the machine I'm supposed to enter them into?

A) You need to read through Atrus' journal. There are four
four-word statements that are in "bold". You need to translate these into
the correct symbols, and put them in the puzzle. The catch is, one of the
sentences contains words you don't know the symbols for yet. Throw this
one out for now. You'll note that the three symbols you found in the
other ages are actually two word statements that are subsets of the four
word statements in Atrus' journal. They show you the correct way to place
the symbols on the machine (which order the words go in).

Q) I got outside the shield, found the book back to Narayan, but every
time I go back there, Saavedro just kills me. What should I do?

A) Notice the banners with new translations of symbols in the new
room. You should be able to finish up translating that 4th phrase you
   haven't used yet, right?

Q) Okay, I'm here but I'm already stumped. What is the deal with the
symbols and the machine I'm supposed to enter them into?

A) This one is a tuffy to graph out, so I will instead post a screen shot.

   Visit http://ggc.dyndns.org/~hitman/symbols1.jpg for the completed
   puzzle layout.

If you want to try to solve it on your own, these are the sentences and
the order you need to put them in:

"Energy Powers Future Motion" goes in the top.
"Nature Encourages Mutual Dependance" goes in the bottom left.
"Dynamic Forces Spur Change" goes in the bottom right.

You need to go to the banners, and look up what symbols stand for the
words in these phrases. Write them down, and head toward the input
machine. When you are inputting the symbols, the first word goes on
the top circle, and then proceeds clockwise around. When you get all
four symbols of one phrase right, it will light up bright white. When
you get all three phrases done, the shield will drop.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) I got outside the shield, found the book back to Narayan, but every
time I go back there, Saavedro just kills me. What should I do?

A) Same as the puzzle above. You need to move the lever to face
the other control mechanism. This time there is only one phrase you need
   to translate:

   "Balanced Systems Stimulate Civilizations"

Using the banners below and above, translate into the correct symbols and
put them in the control mechanism like you did before. Viola. You've
   opened the outer sphere.

   puzzle layout.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Saavedro comes down and tries to bargain with me: He'll give you the
Raleeshahn book if you move the lever, but I move the lever and he
throws the book over the edge! Help?

A) Go up to the top where you turned the "power" on when you
initially met Saavedro. Turn the power off, trapping Saavedro. He's a
little more cooperative now when you go back downstairs and look outside
   at him cowering at you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Should I let the bastard rot on this island for all he's put me
   through?

A) Two different endings if you decide to free him or not. If you
do, make sure you point the lever downstairs to point to the outer sphere
opening mechanism, then go up and turn the power on. If you don't, just
leave back to Narayan. Congratulations, you've won the game.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q) Which endings are there? [SPOILER]

A) There are 6 endings that I've found. 3 "bad" endings and 2 regular
   endings.

   BAD ENDINGS:

   1) Go back to Tomahna before opening the outer sphere. Saavedro will
follow you and knock you about the head (and probably the same fate
goes to Atrus and his wife).

   2) Walk outside after Saavedro says he will trade the book if you move
the shield. After a little while, he will become infuriated and
drop the book over the side and knock you over the head.

   3) Go ahead and agree to Saavedro's demands. He will chuck the book down
the gorge after you open the outer sphere, and you will be forced to
      return to Tomahna emptyhanded.

   4) If you open the inner sphere instead of the outer one (to free Saavedro),
he will come up and crunch your skull. Nice guy.

   REGULAR ENDINGS:

Depending on wether or not you decided to free Saavadro before returning
to Tomahna, you will get two different endings.
