Speaking with Eurogamer, Guerilla Games producer Poria Torkan says that the studio had hoped to include cooperative multiplayer in their first-person shooter at launch but the mode will arrive for those gamers who bought Killzone: Shadow Fall's season pass soon.
"The best metaphor for making a launch title is it's like driving a race car while the car is still being built around you," Torkan explained. "You're working towards a goal, but in the meantime the hardware itself is also coming together; the libraries and the controller and everything."
Guerilla Games wanted to include the mode in the original release but due to these limitations, Season Pass holders and those willing to purchase the DLC once it launches will be able to enjoy co-op with friends this year.
Four-player cooperative multiplayer comes in two varieties for Killzone: Shadow Fall. First is a wave-based mode where players choose a class and do their best to work together to survive against the enemy A.I. Players will also be able to choose Intercept mode which brings jet packs (from Killzone 3) to Killzone: Shadow Fall.
"That's the type of thing where when you're doing a launch title you need to focus. Obviously you want to have the jet packs and the driving sections and the mechs, but we were already re-factoring our engine and there was a new networking module. If we were also doing this we were going to be too diverse. But now we had the time and proper purpose to bring it back," Torkan explained.
Eurogamer's full interview goes into great detail about the development process behind Killzone: Shadow Fall and the race to launch alongside PlayStation 4 last year, but even more interesting are a few scant details about the developer's next project. Mostly Guerilla wants fans to know that the next game will be "really awesome" but Torkan couldn't say much about the project.
"If I even say one word people will kill me. Compare the first games that came out on the PS3 to The Last of Us or GTA5. It's amazing."
