New Warriors canceled

New Warriors’ showrunner says Marvel show was canceled for being ‘too gay’

Why was New Warriors canceled? The live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe show was sadly canceled back in 2016 and would’ve featured the first live-action version of fan-favorite Marvel hero Squirrel Girl, who got briefly revealed. The reason for the New Warriors TV show’s cancellation has been released by ex-showrunner Kevin Biegel, along with a few comments from Squirrel Girl actor Milana Vayntrub. So why was it canceled? The alleged answer isn’t a pleasant one, sadly.

Why was New Warriors canceled?

According to showrunner Kevin Biegel in a now-deleted tweet (stored by CBR), the New Warriors show was canceled by “a singular power” who “got fired for being vile at his company” because the show “was too gay.”

While only the pilot was filmed, New Warriors was meant to be an MCU-set youth-orientated TV show that would feature some of the lesser-known heroes of the Marvel universe, including Squirrel Girl/Doreen Green (Milana Vayntrub) and Mister Immortal/Craig Hollis (Derek Theler). It was originally supposed to be on Freeform but got pushed back and eventually canceled, despite Marvel president Dan Buckley saying they were “extremely excited” by the show.

Biegel also posted numerous behind-the-scenes pictures of Milana Vayntrub in costume as the MCU’s Squirrel Girl, along with the puppet version of the character’s squirrel sidekick Tippy-Toe. All of these have since been deleted but were caught by various fans on Twitter, including a video of Biegel showing the pilot to his children. Since the show’s cancellation, Vayntrub has voiced Squirrel Girl in multiple animations in the Marvel Rising line, and appeared as Cecily Moore in Ubisoft’s Werewolves Within movie this year.

As for New Warriors, it’s still possible that it may get picked up by Disney Plus, but Marvel would have to be able to fit it in its packed schedule for the next few years. In recent Marvel news, the What If? animated show just did a messy Marvel Zombies episode, and the Shang-Chi movie just set up high stakes for the MCU’s Phase 4.
