If you’re hoping for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer, you’re going to be disappointing. Activision isn’t keen on releasing a multiplayer experience for Modern Warfare 2 Remastered — and that’s a good thing.
Back when Modern Warfare 2 originally launched, the multiplayer infuriated many players due to its lack of dedicated servers. After the furor died down, those who stuck it out found a pretty decent online experience despite the fewer options for playing how you want.

It’s been more than ten years since then and some of us might be looking back at the game’s multiplayer with rose-tinted glasses. It wasn’t perfect and did have its fair share of problems — but then again, what Call of Duty launch doesn’t?
Whether you think Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer was good or bad, we’re not going to be getting it (at least, not anytime soon). And believe it or not, that’s probably for the best.
Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer would hurt other CoD games
While the most recent Call of Duty games have been tremendously popular, consider how many games in the franchise have active multiplayer scenes right now:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
- Call of Duty: Mobile
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Call of Duty: Warzone
Granted, I imagine that a lot of people are playing more than one of these games, but you can only actually play one game at a time. Many gamers migrate to the newest title in the franchise, and the launch of Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer would fragment the franchise’s player base even further than it already is.
Activision, for their part, feels the same way. They want to bring players together, not split them apart.
“Beginning with Modern Warfare last year, the focus has been to bring players together seamlessly in one unified online multiplayer playground,” stated an Activision blog post. “With cross-play, releasing new post-launch maps, modes, weapons and more content drops for free, and launching Warzone, the Free-to-Play, Free-for-Everyone new Call of Duty experience, the Modern Warfare universe will expand, bringing new experiences to players.”
Bringing classic Modern Warfare 2 maps (and maybe some of the weapons) to the more modern experiences won’t quite be the same, but it’s all you’re gonna get. While a dedicated Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer might be desirable for some of the more hardcore fans, it wouldn’t be healthy for the franchise as a whole.
