Super Smash Bros Goku

Smash Bros. Goku cameo will never happen, creator reiterates once again

Wouldn’t it be memorable to see Dragon Ball Z’s biggest star Goku joining the Super Smash Bros. roster? In fact, many Super Smash Bros players keep asking Nintendo about it, more specifically targeting their requests at franchise creator Masahiro Sakurai. With several fighters frequently added via DLC, it doesn’t sound like a stretch to see Son Goku, a natural born fighter, in Super Smash Bros Ultimate one of these days. But that won’t happen, as Sakurai has once again reiterated that Goku is not coming to the game.

Sakurai first shot down the idea of Goku back in May, citing that non-video game characters wouldn’t be in Smash. So even though Goku has been in some video games (and in some video games more than once), he won’t be coming to Smash Bros. anytime soon. And he wasn’t kidding because he reiterated this once during the Japan Game Awards 2019 on September 12 and gave the same reasons as he did back in May. Twitter user PushDustIn gave a translation of Sakurai’s words.

“I get all these kinds of requests from abroad like, ‘Where is my believed Iron Man?’ or ‘Where is my beloved Goku?’ However, basically (Smash) will only have content from video games in it,” translated the user.

So it isn’t necessarily a licensing thing reason as Bandai Namco owns the rights to develop video games based on the Dragon Ball franchise. It seems to be just (or mostly) Sakurai’s insistence on only having video game characters. That is why you get Terry Bogard from SNK’s Fatal Fury, Banjo-Kazooie, Pac-Man, and even the Wii Fit trainer gets to pull some punches but not Iron Man or the Terminator for that matter, despite the latter’s prevalence in 2019.

Sometimes, is reason to have hope that a cheeky debunking is fake, but given Sakurai’s insistence, it truly doesn’t look like we will see any Kamehamehas in Smash.
