Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Sales Debut Beaten by Super Mario Party in Japan

A bunch of major new releases arrived last week, and it was an epic battle of the charts. In Japan, Super Mario Party has managed to rise to the top of the charts in Japan, beating other highly-anticipated games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Mega Man 11. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey sales in its first week has been particularly disappointing, with Super Mario Party selling three times as many copies as Ubisoft’s latest installment in the iconic franchise.

According to the most recent Media Create Sales figures, Super Mario Party managed to sell a total of 142,868 units in its debut week. In comparison, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey sales on the PS4 only reached 45,166 units, which is less than half of the aforementioned Nintendo Switch exclusive. Warriors Orochi 4, which was number one in the charts last week, performed relatively well with 24,005 units sold, raising the total tally to 124,836.

Meanwhile, Mega Man 11 sales reception has been lukewarm at best, even in its home country. The most recent title in the long-running franchise sold 14,650 and 12,052 units on the Nintendo Switch and PS4, respectively. That combines to a total of merely 26,702 units, which is half the number of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey sales. Despite the underwhelming sales, Mega Man 11 has received stellar reviews from many publications, including from us at Game Revolution. We gave it an Editor’s Choice badge and a rating of 4.5 out of five in our review.

Last month’s releases like Spider-Man PS4 and FIFA 19 have managed to remain in the top ten of the Japanese charts. On another note, the Nintendo Switch remained the king of hardware sales in Japan, with the PS4 selling less than half the number of units as the hybrid console. The Xbox family of consoles also remained at the bottom of the hardware charts but enjoyed increased sales compared to last week.
