Nintendo Patents Wii U Multi-display Panorama View

Patented technology rarely sees implementation into product, but this is one you're very likely to use.

Nintendo has secured a patent for a Multi-display Panorama View technology on the Wii U. In essence, it allows the player to utilize the GamePad's motion sensing capabilities and second screen to view outside the image on the television.

This might sound frivolous, and it's already used in some of the minigames of Nintendo Land (i.e. The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest). While those are just small application of the technology, there could be some very practical uses in the future. Imagine an HD Pokemon Snap where the television guides you along the track and the forward viewing angle remains on the television but you can use the GamePad to take photos. Better yet, how about a new Fatal Frame in which your character remains on-screen but the GamePad is used for a first-person camera mode.

I think there's some potential here, and other platforms have tried to realize it for years without the advantage of a second screen on the controller. For now, we'll have to wait and see if it ever makes its way into a AAA title.
