Devil May Cry 5 Will Be the “Peak of Action Games,” says Capcom

Capcom has said that Devil May Cry 5 will be the “peak of action games,” according to details about the game that surfaced online earlier today. We also know that there’s going to be a focus on photorealism, as well as when we’ll get to give the game a go.

In an upcoming feature in Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Devil May Cry 5 director Hideaki Itsuno and producers Michiteru Okabe and Matt Walker were asked about details regarding the game. The interview was translated by Siliconera, and it gives us an insight into what to expect. One point of note is that Capcom is expecting to have a playable demo of Devil May Cry 5 available at Gamescom 2018 in August, where they’ll also be unveiling more info.

Until then, here’s what else we know: Devil May Cry 5 is going to have a focus on photorealism, and this is going to impact the game in a number of ways. They’re working on ensuring a consistent 60 frames-per-second for a fluid and responsive “high-speed battle feel.” All people in Devil May Cry 5 will be 3D-scanned, as will all of the clothing that they wear.

The impact will extend beyond aesthetics, however. Because of this photo-realism focus, Capcom has removed a former series feature of being able to cancel motion, like attacks and movement. The reasoning behind this is that with the high frame-rate and the fidelity of the graphics, “motion skipping” would feel strange, in what Capcom has described as “the uncanny valley of action.” One part of this that the team struggled to find the right way to make you feel the weight of your character turning around.

There were a few other cool details, like the background music changing when you land combos, in order to up the ante of the action. There were also some little teasers for the narrative, like Dante not having gone wild for no reason, and the relation between Nico and her tattoos being a secret.
