A series of highly controversial comments reportedly made by a writer for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire have surfaced online, in which an RPG forum account seemingly associated with the writer said of the Manchester bombings “you get what you prepare for,” added that unmarried Muslim men should not be allowed entry into the US, and that he would continue to have sex with black women “until one of their boyfriends jacks me with a pipe.”
The controversy, which has now allegedly caused the writer to resign from the project, arose after it was revealed by Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer that the developer had contracted Casey to work on the upcoming Pillars of Eternity II, which led to old RPG Codex forum posts allegedly made by him surfacing on Reddit. The account Casey seemingly posts from, named “sser,” lists him as a writer on Battle Brothers, a game Casey worked on, while another thread sees fellow forum posters congratulating him on the position with Obsidian.

In one comment, the account linked to Casey made abhorrent remarks following news of the Manchester terror attack. The attack, which took place at the Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande concert back in May, ultimately killed 23 people and injured 250, many of them young fans of the pop star. In a thread titled ‘Manchester terrorist attack. Yes, a Muslim again – 22 dead, 59 wounded,’ he wrote:
“Is it mean to say you get what you prepare for? Is that a nasty thing to say? Because I feel as though if I had my way a lot more people would be alive right now. Maybe that’s just me. The problem is so obvious it should be self-rectifying, but here we are. Again. Nothing but frustration, sadness, and anger on this end. By the way, Muslims have been wholesale slaughtering children in their little regions for years now. Don’t put it past them to start doing it in the West. We’ve already seen the mimicking and self-propagating nature of truck attacks so, yeah, buckle down for more of this garbage while most of the population plugs their ears and pretends to not have a hand in exactly what is being inflicted upon them.”
In another post, he wrote: “This is why I see mindful immigration at a time like this as a form of preservation of Western ideals,” later adding: “Well, for one example, if it’s an unmarried male Muslim you don’t let them in, period.” In response to Confederate monuments in Baltimore being removed following the Charlottesville protest, he commented: “Baltimore Monument Toppled! -1 Culture per turn.”
In another thread, he wrote: “Black women are the best at sex and it’s not even a close competition. I will continue to ‘mix’ it up until one of their boyfriends jacks me with a pipe or some other aspect of this reality changes.’
After his forum posts made their way to Reddit, sser posted a now-deleted comment in the RPG Codex forums earlier this morning claiming that he had handed his resignation letter to Josh Sawyer, accepting “full responsibility” for his comments. The post reads: “Doesn’t matter. I sent Josh my resignation from the project. It’d be some real bullshit for some freelancer to drop a steamy deuce of a controversy on their development and I just don’t think that is fair to them. The Manchester comment was embarrassingly insensitive even now. It was just me typing and posting so I accept full responsibility. It is what it is. See ya, space cowboys. I’m going for a run.”
We reached out to Obsidian yesterday for comment, though have yet to receive a response. We will update this post if we hear back from them.
