Total War: Warhammer Just Became A Yearly Franchise, And Some Fans Are Upset

Total War: Warhammer's release last year was a monumental one. Considered one of a very small number of high quality Warhammer games among a sea of sub-par releases, it earned widespread recognition among strategy and fantasy fans. To-date it's sold more than 1.5 million copies on Steam, prompting a quick and decisive sequel.

Creative Assembly and Games Workshop are currently working on Total War: Warhammer 2, as announced by publisher SEGA a few minutes ago.

Among its new content will be four new factions which include the High Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen, and another that is yet to be revealed. Similar to the previous game, each faction will battle for territory on a campaign map, though this time the primary objective will be taking over the Great Vortex, a powerful arcane magic that has "swirled for millennia above the eleven homeland of Ulthuan". Each faction will have its own interaction with the Great Vortex, whether it be disrupting it, or fostering its power.

Some Total War fans have voiced displeasure over the announcement since it hasn't even been a year since its predecessor released, and at this point many strategy fans desire a historical Total War game like Rome: Total War or Total War: Shogun. The announcement video currently stands with a nearly 50% upvote/downvote ratio, which is uncharcteristic of the franchise. For the fans who aren't happy, it's important to note that a historical Total War is in-development by a separate division of the team at Creative Assembly.

Total War: Warhammer 2 will release before the end of 2017 exclusively for PC.
