First Baldur’s Gate 3 community update explains how Larian made it happen

After years of false starts and disappointments, Baldur’s Gate 3 might finally see the light of day. Now, in its first Baldur’s Gate 3 community update, Larian Studios explains a bit of how it was actually able to get the deal to make the game.

The community update video shows a humorous re-enactment of how Larian sold the concept to Dungeons and Dragons IP holder Wizards of the Coast. Based on the video, Wizards of the Coast had a number of requirements for the new game.

Wizards of the Coasts demanded that the game be big, Baldur’s Gate 3 needed to be “a grand adventure.” Of course, being a Dungeons and Dragons game, it needs to stay true to the franchise’s lore. Then, Wizards of the Coast wanted the game to give its players a sense of agency. Players in Baldur’s Gate 3 need to feel that “their choices matter.” Finally, Wizards is setting the bar very high for Larian, who must “overdeliver.”

Additionally, in a more humorous segment, Wizards of the Coasts apparently wanted “ceremorphosis” to be featured in the game. Ceremorphosis is a bodily change from monster that burrows into the victim’s brain and eats it and assumes contortion of the victim.

Of course, the video is just showing a humorous, tongue-in-cheek take on their meetings. So there’s no way to know if Wizards of the Coast actually required that Larian Founder Sven Linke learn how to pronounce “ceremorphosis.” And Linke most likely didn’t kidnap anyone while wearing a full suite of armor.

The re-enactment doesn’t really give that much insight into the corporate dealings behind the game. It serves more as a way to explain both companies’ goals for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Also, the serious bit of the video at the end does give some insight on how the two entities are working on Baldur’s Gate 3. Linke explains how staff from both places have been spending time in each other’s offices to make sure they deliver on their goals.

Finally, Linke also announced a new newsletter called the “Larian Gazette” where fans can stay informed about developments on the game. This will act similar to the updates it did on the Kickstarter pages for their Divinity games.

It seems that Larian and Wizards of the Coast has set some lofty goals for Baldur’s Gate 3. With these community updates, each is making sure that fans are kept up to date on their progress of reaching these goals.
