In Memorium: Windy Ross

This is one of most difficult manifestos I’ve had to write. It is with a heavy heart that I must notify our community that Windy Ross, a writer for Game Revolution and prior GR Codemaster joeblow‘s partner, has passed away due to illness.

Over the course of four years, from 2007 to 2011, Windy wrote over 35 reviews ranging from Brain Age 2 and Beautiful Katamari, to Guitar Hero 5 and The Sims 3. She also authored numerous previews and contributed to many Game Revolution staff features, always guiding readers with her heedful honesty.

Windy had that rare spirit, that kind of unflappable optimism, that lights up a room. I will never forget her wide smile and easy laughter. Her mere presence brought joy and cheer.

Her passing has made me contemplate our legacy at Game Revolution. We leave our words in the form of news, reviews, previews, and comments, one of many in the cosmically large digital space of the Internet. Our work is made permanent in a place where death is not readily recognized. It’s one of my fears.

It’s only after a week of inactivity that followers on the Internet might seriously begin to question where someone has gone, and with the high frequency of freelancers moving from one gaming site to another, the absence of one writer on Game Revolution can be seen as that person merely moving on. Which is why it’s so important to clarify when that is not the case, when moving on has an entirely different meaning.

I only hope that my legacy is as sincere and spirited as hers.

Our condolences to Windy’s friends and family.

“Nothing I can say can really explain just how sweet a person Windy was, so I’ll simply say this: Thank you for every chat, every meet, every thing, every time, Windy. It’s been truly wonderful.” ~Kevin Schaller
