Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro review

Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro Headset Review

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro headset aims to deliver a professional studio sound with gaming tuning, a tricky challenge, but one that Beyerdynamic’s reputation suggests it can achieve. Can the MMX 300 Pro elevate gaming audio to the next level? Here is my review.

A stellar approach

The key feature of the MMX 300 Pro stands out when looking at the spec sheet. It’s the STELLAR 45 driver, which gives this headset the best chance of standing out with studio-grade sound.

While this is a closed-back headset, there is still a significantly wide soundstage, something that Beyerdynamic has achieved in other headphones like the classic DT 770 Pro, a go-to for many gamers. So while the closed-back design might initially be a red flag, worry not, for the MMX 300 Pro sounds impressively open, which is ideal for games where players need to track enemies.

High-quality mic

Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro review

What makes a headset a headset? The microphone! For the MMX 300 Pro, Beyerdynamic has opted for a fixed microphone, which means you’re permanently locked into “Headset Mode” with no way to turn it into a pair of headphones. The microphone is a high-quality condenser, designed for clear speech.

Also worth mentioning is the overall build quality as, like many of Beyerdynamic’s other headphones and headsets, the MMX 300 Pro is built like a tank and makes me very confident in its long-term durability. Though, I would urge users to treat this headset with respect and take care of it. If it’s anything like my DT 770 Pro headphones, it will last decades when treated right!

Sound for life

Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro review

Highlights of the MMX 300 Pro include the sound quality, with the STELLAR 45 driver delivering an excellent balance of frequencies that come into their own during gameplay. The tuning might be subtle, but I appreciate what Beyerdynamic has done here.

Unmatched comfort

Comfort is another highlight, with the ear pads being supremely comfortable. This may well be the most comfortable closed-back headset that I have ever worn. However, for those who have never used a Beyerdynamic headset before, it may take some time to get used to the clamping force. I remember using the back of my office chair to help loosen the clamp when I first got my DT 770 Pro. Once tuned, it’s perfect.

Potential limitations

The downsides are more obvious, with the lack of a removable mic and wire no doubt limiting the headset’s appeal to some users. I’d also say that, while the soundstage is impressive for a closed-back headphone, there is a limit and open-back will generally be a better option for those who don’t mind the sound leakage.

Final Verdict

At $329.99, the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Pro is a premium headset that prioritizes quality audio and durability over extra features. With impressive sound performance, solid build, and comfortable design, it’s a great choice for serious gamers. While its fixed microphone and closed-back design may not suit everyone, it delivers a reliable and immersive audio experience for those willing to invest.
