Skullcandy TMNT PLYR Review

The Skullcandy TMNT PLYR grabbed my attention in the same way that the original PLYR headset did — with an eye-catching design. With most other headsets designed to be subtle, it’s good to see Skullcandy going in the other direction. And what a direction to go in, as the collaboration with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has allowed for an impressively green colorway!

100% TMNT

The Skullcandy x TMNT PLYR headset is a visual feast for fans. Its unique design, featuring turtle-shell earcups, a manhole cover inside the ear cushion, and a radioactive headband, immediately grabs attention. The pepperoni pizza boom mic adds a fun, quirky touch, true to the spirit of TMNT.

With glow-in-the-dark elements and the option to change ear gel and suspension headband colorways, the headset allows users to personalize their gear to represent their favorite turtle. This attention to detail in design is impressive, catering to even the biggest TMNT fans.

No major compromises to sound

Skullcandy TMNT PLYR Review

As explained in my original PLYR review, sound quality is perfectly fine for gaming, with lows, mids, and highs well-represented. While Skullcandy has other headphones that deliver intentionally powerful bass, the PLYR plays it safe with the tried-and-tested “V curve” that should please most gamers.

When it comes to directionality, the PLYR performed perfectly fine and I could pinpoint enemies in Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends without any issues.

You win some; you lose some

The mic, however, continues to fall short of expectations at this price point. While it’s passable and will be fine for shouting out enemy positions and whatnot, I wouldn’t rely on it for anything more. You may want to look elsewhere if you plan to get a headset with a microphone suitable for live-streaming or creating YouTube content.

Comfort is king in gaming headsets, and the Skullcandy PLYR doesn’t disappoint. The adjustable suspension headband works well, reducing pressure and ensuring comfort during long, multi-hour gaming sessions. The on-board controls for mute and volume are conveniently placed, allowing for easy adjustments.

Final Verdict

Priced at $149.99, the Skullcandy TMNT PLYR headset is positioned in the mid-range market segment. For fans of the TMNT franchise and those valuing unique design and solid audio performance, the price is perhaps justifiable. The extreme green colorway earns top marks for me. However, if you’re not into the design and good microphone quality is one of your top priorities, then there’s little reason to pick up the Skullcandy TMNT PLYR, at least for full price.
