Dead Rising 2: Case Zero Preview

Goin’ to the chop shop.

If you’re anything like the rest of us here at the GR compound, then you’re probably looking forward to hacking the crap out of zombies in Dead Rising 2 with all sorts of odd gadgets and duct-taped-together weapons. But before you get your hands on the highly anticipated sequel, Capcom is giving Xbox 360 owners a chance to whet their appetite for gore and braiiiiiins with an exclusive downloadable prologue. Case Zero will help fill in the blanks between Dead Rising 1 and 2 and explain just how the hell things got to their current state of zombiepocalypse-ness.

[image1]You take on the role of Chuck Greene, the same guy you’ll be playing through in 2. You and your daughter have been stranded about 40 miles outside of Vegas in a tiny little town. In a very similar vein to the original, you’re on a time crunch. Your daughter is in need of medication every 12 hours, the military is sending in reinforcements soon, and as if that wasn’t enough, your only chance for escape before the blockade arrives and more than likely blows everything to bits, is a motorcycle that’s in desperate need of repair. Along the way you’ll run into some locals who need help as well and may offer up some assistance of their own; for example, helping a local pawn broker escape back to his shop will let you purchase items from him.

Gameplay is exactly the same as you’ll find in 2. I’m sure there will be plenty of weapons and skills that you won’t get a chance to play with until the actual sequel, but baseball bats with nails in them and buckets with drills in them that you put on top of zombies heads are just a few examples of combination weapons that you’ll get an early look at. Plus there are wasps flying around that, when killed will make the undead do silly things, such as spaz out like an epileptic at a laser show before their heads suddenly explode.

[image2]Case Zero will give folks about five hours worth of dismember-mental fun and will be coming out a few weeks before Dead Rising 2 hits store shelves. And the best part of it is, all the experience you earn in Zero will carry over to 2, giving you yet another reason to check out this XBLA exclusive. Not that you really needed an excuse to let out your frustrations on the armies of the damned.
