Why are the Biomutant characters so damn ugly?

Biomutant review scores have just come out, less than a day before the game’s official release. The scores range from extremely bad to extremely good, leveling out to around a 67 average. And while some are divided on the game’s open world and gameplay systems, there is — or, at least, there should be — consensus on how haunting the game’s characters look, which are some of the ugliest characters in gaming in recent history.

Actually, these might be the most hideous characters in any game ever. Our wallpaper gallery only gives a slight glimpse into the cursed furballs in Experiment 101’s debut title as it really is the tip of butt-ugly iceberg. An assberg, if you will.

Monster factory

The character creator houses some of these mutated rejects. The sliders can be moved in a bunch of different directions, but no matter input, the output is always the same: an experiment that would even be too much for Dr. Moreau. The base characters are just that fucked. The arms are too long and gangly and the heads are either too large or too small. There is no middle ground, only the discomfort found in each extreme.

Although there is no middle ground with the “Charisma” stat, which freakishly bloats the character’s mouth up as the stat is pumped up. That is obviously what trait charismatic people have: freakishly large mouths.

Fip is the best example of the worst as he got all of the worst genes in the gene pool filled with raw sewage. He’s an unfortunate lad with the longest arms, roundest head, and the beadiest-of-the-beady eyes that don’t get magically get better once the sliders are in the “right” place. Fip shouldn’t be allowed out of the house. He would scare the children.

Fip is just worst in a field where “worst” is not always clear. Somehow all of the created characters are all the worst.

A smile and blue fur doesn’t help either, even though it seems like it is content with its ugliness. It’s the persistent jet-black beady eyes, buck teeth, and misshapen limbs.

Demented mounts

Horses are majestic creatures, useful for their utility as vehicles and their natural beauty. Biomutant’s “horses” are like if Junji Ito created a nightmare you could ride. Some, like the one in the above picture, are completely out of place in the game’s colorful world and something out of Inside or Limbo.

It somehow looks even worse in action as it gallops like it isn’t a spawn of the underworld. It’s somewhat normal bottom half is betrayed by its ghoulish head that looks like it feeds on children to stay young.

Ominously white eyes are better than the soulless black eyes in some of the other mounts. The human-like teeth are just part of the overall horror and they do little to distract from those grisly peepers. The only place to ride that purple cretin is off a cliff.

Beastly bosses

Bosses are not safe either. Jumbo Puff, one of the bosses, is already a weird hybrid of a shark and the Cookie Monster, which is odd enough. But, again, someone had to go and add tiny black eyes to it and make it that much more grotesque. It just does not work.

Beady eyes are just a mainstay across the board. This other boss, three-headed shark tiger (a tiger shark, get it?), is an interesting mix of a carnivorous mammal and carnivorous fish. That much is a great, inspired design. But its cool factor is betrayed by the eyeballs. They look like slightly menacing sock puppets with those button-like eyes on them. Googly eyes would be more threatening and about a hundred times less dumb.

It is not at all clear why just about everything in Biomutant is the weirdest shit imaginable. Experiment 101, at every turn, went down the path of the wicked and cursed with its character design. Human-like teeth, gangly arms, overly round heads, tiny eye: it’s all, sadly, here. It’s shocking that the rocks and trees don’t also share these nightmarish features. Some may enjoy the abominations as it makes the game stand out, but most will probably see them for what they are: creations that look like they came from the most unsettling furry Deviant Art artist on the planet.
