Letter From the Editor: GameRevolution’s review scale has changed

Today, the GameRevolution team is excited to reveal that we’ll be moving to a 10-point scale for the first time in the site’s history. This is a significant step forward for GR reviews, allowing us to more adequately reflect our thoughts on the games we play with the scores we assign to them.

Over the years, GameRevolution’s reviews have gone through a couple of changes. First, there was the GR Report Card, which rewarded games a score between an ‘A’ and ‘F’ rating. Next, there was our 5-point scale, which GR used right up until this year. Now, with the site set for bigger and brighter things in 2021 and beyond, we’re also shifting to bigger scores — from here on out, GameRevolution reviews will be given a score between 0–10, with delicious decimals in-between.

gr review changes

So why the change? The simple answer is that the GameRevolution team has wanted this improvement for a while. The purpose of reviews is to not only offer recommendations to our readers, but to also give our reviewers a space in which they can express their thoughts and feelings on a game. The score at the end of a review encapsulates these thoughts into a number for readers who are bereft of time, with the previous 5-point scale sometimes undermining that. Five is a small number, y’know? Giving a game we really enjoyed but had issues with a 3 out of 5 always felt a little odd, but now we have five whole new numbers to play. 6–10, we’re looking forward to using you.

You can check out our full grading system here, but we’ve included a summary below:

10: Legendary

One for the ages. The cream of the crop. It doesn’t get any better than this.

9: Fantastic

Play this game ASAP.

8: Great.

There’s a lot to love here.

7: Good

It’s worth your time.

6: Average

Walks the line but does little else.

5: Mediocre

Some might enjoy it, but it’s still not a good game.

4: Bad

We can’t recommend it.

3: Terrible

Some decent ideas still don’t make this worth playing.

2: Dreadful

Don’t subject yourself to this, even if it looks like it might be okay.

1: Abysmal

Not worth your time, effort, or money.

0: Tragic

We beg you not to play this game.

This is the first in a number of exciting additions to GameRevolution we’ll be rolling out throughout this year, so keep your eyes peeled on the site for announcements in the near-future.
