Retro Ad Replay – Skate 3’s 10th Anniversary

It’s time for another Retro Ad Replay article! This is the series where we head backwards in time to reminisce and celebrate the anniversary of some of the most significant moments in gaming. If you find yourself wanting more content like this, be sure to visit Mandatory.com.

In this May 11 edition of Retro Ad Replay, we’re heading back 10 years to when Skate 3 first launched on Xbox 360 and PS3. May 11, 2010 was the day when players got to experience the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Skate 2. The third game in the series aimed to give players the “definitive co-op skateboarding experience,” with “unique team challenges” and “rival crews online.” Players could also build custom parks in the “Skate.Park” mode.

The GameRevolution SKATE 3 review wasn’t too kind to the game, allocating it a 2.5/5. Our reviewer praised the “ambitious online play” and “deep clan support,” but said that the “performance issues,” “heavily limited competition areas,” and “flawed team events” let it down.

Here’s a snippet from the GR review:

With SKATE 2 released just a little over a year ago, it’s clear that SKATE 3 was pumped out too quickly. The ideas are great, but the lack of polish is evident with every flip, flop, and flub. The tricks haven’t been tweaked much at all since SKATE 2, and the technical issues and over-ambitious online play suggest that SKATE 3 is REACHING TOO FAR TOO FAST. After seeing the venerable TONY HAWK PRO SKATER series sink to lower and lower depths, it’s a disappointingly familiar sight seeing another skating series follow in its footsteps. But the real shame is that the SKATE series never had a chance to reach its full potential before its steady DECLINE.

The Skate 3 launch trailer is still available on the official YouTube channel. We’ve embedded it below:
