Tell GR: What Do You Make of Soulja Boy’s ‘New’ Consoles?

Yesterday we asked you what gaming gift you hope to receive this holiday season. Unsuprisingly, no one listed any of Soulja Boy’s new video gaming swag. With the constant barrage of surprise gaming news coming from Soulja Boy, it seems more and more evidence is building that we’re actually living in a complex computer simulation that has been infected with some meme virus.

In today’s Tell GR we dive deep into our personal feelings concerning Soulja Boy’s entry into the video game business. Do we laugh, do we cry? I don’t know anymore. Tell us what you think below and we’ll feature our favorite comment in tomorrow’s Tell GR.

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: I think the whole thing is just another example of celebrity endorsement gone wrong. Fortunately, unlike say Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop which sold coffee enema kits, Soulja Boy’s video game stuff isn’t going to cause any physical harm to anyone. The only reason any of this is newsworthy is just because it’s weird. I’d probably be madder if the situation wasn’t so incredibly transparent, but I would honestly be surprised if anyone that had played video games in the last 30 years was misled by a Soulja Boy game console. I mean, just think about it for a second, that concept should be a red flag for all but the most Luddite of grandmas.

Bradley Russell, news editor: Part of me feels sorry for the guy. He seems blinded by the lights probably shined in his eyes by a shady businessman or two, but he also must know the influence he has on his audience, particularly those who might hang on his every word. I won’t be buying it, nor would I recommend anyone else doing so, but I also don’t want everyone to dunk on him when it eventually blows up in his face. We’ve had enough car crashes in the industry without another one to slow down and laugh at.

Michael Leri, features editor: It all reeks of bullshit made up on a house of cards. I can’t imagine many people are buying and he probably just got swindled by some shady assholes looking to bank off “that one rapper who did that song all those years ago.” I could be wrong but this just all seems like a scam from a dude whose popularity has more than faded.
