Survival Horror vs. Action Horror

Survival Horror vs. Action Horror

This image that I found on reddit nearly perfectly sums up the unfortunate transition from survival horror to action horror titles over the last ten years. Though I’m not a connoisseur of the horror genre, even I can tell that we’ve gone away from the psychological subtlety of survival horror with softly creepy environments, to the gun-toting, “kill that scary thing!” ragefest of action horror.

Also, since I have the opportunity… Apparently, in order to make a cover for a survival horror game, you need an image of a pale blonde woman either looking vacantly or down at her yourself or a panorama of a lot of hazy backgrounds. And to make a cover of an action horror game, you need a picture of a man (any dude will do…), someone violently covering someone’s mouth (any mouth…), or a creepy hand (any hand, really).
