Prey’s Mimic Matter Is the Most Ridiculous Stealth Ability Since The Cardboard Box

We all remember the infamous coffee cup from an early trailer of 2017's Prey. You turn into a coffee cup and sneaked your way through a security window. It was a cool concept that looked neat and surprising when showed off in such a way.

Developer Arkane Studios is now giving a more comprehensive look at the ability, called Mimic Matter, which you can unlock throughout the game. But, I gotta say, I haven't seen a stealth mechanic look so ridiculous since the Cardboard Box in Metal Gear Solid.

You'll see segments where a turret will be shooting at you only to see you turn into another turret and begin shooting at it, but the turret will forget all about you (even while attacking it). There's also a particularly funny segment where you run into a big scary monster dude and I imagine the dialogue goes something like "no, no, I'm not a person; I'm an end table." before turning into said table and rolling away apparently scot-free.

In fairness, it does seem that at least some of the enemies you face will be able to sense you when you're inside an inanimate object, and it's important to note that Mimic Matter will also be used to solve environmental puzzles. That being said, I can't imagine all of these objects featured in the trailer are essential to puzzle-solving:

  • Coffe cup
  • Roll of toilet paper
  • Lantern
  • Display of a Human skull
  • Snack bag
  • Pizza box
  • Wireless headphones
  • An apple
  • A picture frame
  • End table
  • Teapot
  • Wet floor sign
  • Drone of some sort
  • Turret
  • Banana (floating through space)

But if they are, well played, Arkane. Well played.
